So a rep from one of my top schools is coming to my high school. I have a bunch of questions.

What should I expect as the general format of the session? General overview/information session on the school? More intimate discussion with a few students (there should be at least ten other students there)? Someone told me that there might be interviews?

What should I bring? Someone told me I should bring a resume?

About how long will it last?

Mostly these are info sessions where the rep is trying to disseminate info to potential applicants. He/she is trying to sell the college to you. It would be highly unlikely that any sort of interview would take place given that these are generally aimed at Juniors and Seniors.

What to bring? Really nothing. If it’s a smaller LAC or college that values demonstrated interest, definitely introduce yourself and let the rep know that it’s one of your top choices.

It should last 40-50 minutes with presentation and Q & A following. Hob nob a bit afterwards.

The same university is also having a information session at my school the night before for the entire county (the one I mentioned earlier is just for our students). Should I go to both (time is not an issue)? Will it be very repetitive?

They will be exactly the same. I agree with 1down – go to the school one if you can afford to miss class, if not, go to the other. You don’t need to bring anything but yourself and any questions you have. The format will basically be some admissions rep giving you the lowdown on the school they represent. Nothing mind-blowing or anything.

It’s basically just an info session, there will most likely not be interviews, unless it has already been set up before that the admissions rep will do interviews at your school. DO NOT bring a resume! That’s incredibly pretentious.

In many cases the rep going to your school is the regional admission officer that will be reviewing your application. What you need to do is first check out the college web site to uncover who the admissions officer is covering your geographic region. E-mail that person to see if they will be the one visiting your high school. If it is, relate how this is your #1 school and how you look forward to meeting them at your HS. If it turns out to be the admissions officer deciding your fate…smooze him/her, give a copy of your transcript, etc. Let them know you exist! Write to them afterwards thanking them and letting them know you’ll stop by to say hi when you tour that school. If you already toured…tour again just to make another contact. They will usually start a file on you before your application arrives. If you’re a qualified student with serious intent of attending, this admissions officer will want you as much as you want them. Don’t be shy!

There well could be an impromptu interview. If there are not many students who come to the info session, or if the rep has an interest in a student, he/she can certainly pull someone aside for a long chat. This happened to my DD for an Ivy rep. He knew she had made the long trek to his school for a visit, so assumed she was serious about admission.

OP-you might want to have some questions, and reasons for your interest all prepared, just in case you have some one-on-one time with the rep. Good luck.
