When it comes to college applications and standing out against the crowd, what extracurricular activity do you think made you the most unique (or will make you the most unique)?

All I've got as far as extracurriculars are concerned is "volunteering here, volunteering there, volunteering at this place, volunteering at that place" etc., etc.

I feel like volunteer work is something a lot of college applicants have in common, and I'm struggling with figuring out how to make myself stand out as far as extracurriculars are concerned.

Don’t feel like you need to stand out; just do what you want to.

Pick an activity or two, and really devote yourself to it. It doesn’t matter if it’s volunteering, playing a sport, quiz bowl, etc. Most people have relatively similar lives up through age 17. There’s not a whole lot of ways to really distinguish yourself at that age.

Just make sure you work hard at whatever you choose, and you’ll be golden.

As for me, I was a three sport varsity athlete, made all-conference in all three, and was captain of two of them. That is essentially the entirety of my extracurriculars.

Thanks, manarius! Your extracurriculars definitely demonstrate both leadership and teamwork skills.

True. I feel like schools want unique, diverse students and I’ve got myself convinced that “I did vollyball for 10 years” just doesn’t cut it. I’m sure it counts for something, though.

I agree with manarius. Do what you’d like to do. Be yourself and tell the colleges later why that’s awesome.

Also, play on your strengths. I know I’m no good at sports personally. But I’m really into creative stuff such as acting, writing and movie-making.

I think your ability to communicate with them can go a long way too.

PS: Ever considered a sports scholarship? 10 years of volleyball is a lonnng time =D
