Standing out?

How do you make yourself stand out among other applicants for college? I know of the buzzers like CEO of companies, Olympic Champs, famous actors, etc. but are there any realistic stand-outters? Would working for a national magazine or city newspaper make you stand out? How about hosting for a local TV show? Coming from a very low-income family? First college-bound generation?
Others?

you've got to actually stand out to stand out.

model? pesonal dinner with george bush? lots of kids don't "plan" to stand out, it kinda happens

Do something unique and amazing. When you do it, you'll know it. Do you think the Olympians/18 year old CEOs/actors/actresses are thinking "gee, I made the Olympics/am a rich CEO/am a really hot actor/actress. Reckon this count as a hook?"

And PS, don't do something in order to stand out. Do something you love, be dedicated, and get really damn good at it. The standing out follows.

To stand out you need to do something that normal kids don't do.

I was reading 10 applications. The only one I remember is the student who was the co-president or something of "safe sex and condom users" club or something like that (it looked like a real, organized and serious organization, really! I just forgot what it was called.).

I agree with everyone so far.

Not really... but it could be a hook depending on where you're applying.

What about riflery. I am pretty good and I might try some competetions soon.

Go to, and win those competitions. Odds are though, you'll find some people who think they're pretty good too and you might change your mind as to how good you are (comparatively).

Sometimes, you don't even have to be great or competitive at something to catch someone's attention. It's all about the individual's pursuit of his or her goals. How your interests create inspiring experiences unique from everyone else's. A kid who's an all-American basketball player is just as interesting as the kid who organizes an after-school miniture basketball league and homework-help center as a positive alternative for surrounding neigborhood kids.
