I think it would be helpful for the members of CC who got in off of waitlists or simply have experience to share their stories. What did you do to get into that top choice that waitlisted you? How did you deal with being placed in limbo?

I could use the advice. I'm sure others could as well.

Last year a good friend of mind had been waitlisted at Davidson. She had realized throughout the months of February and March that this is where she wanted to go, so she was appropriately crushed. But she pulled it together to set up a campaign that was composed of persistent (but not overwhelming) forms of communication with the admissions office. She kindly asked the principal and guidance counselor to call, and she asked the vice principal, three teachers, and a few friends of hers including myself to write e-mails/letters all of which described her strong character and encouraged the college to reconsider. Following this massive campaign she had been quietly promised that she would be the first person to be taken off the waitlist from her region, and eventually was. So just remember to be persistent and you will still have a fighting chance.

If you're talking about ivy type schools, the best advice you can get is to move on and get comfortable with a school you're into. Stay on the waitlist, get more recs, keep them updated etc., but chances are remote (some years they take zero and I believe Harvard took 38 of over 1200 waitlisted last year) and getting on with life is important.
