Soar

I was just wondering if SOAR is worth going to? Is it more important than open house? Should I bring my parents or is it mainly for students? Thanks! :)

I wouldn’t bother going. It was an enormous waste of time (in my estimation at least)

As a parent I felt it was quite worth it. My husband might not totally agree with me, though. But, my daughter was able to meet with one of her advisors that day and have a couple of classes changed. They had made a mistake in her block schedule. Also, the students meet up with their majors and we parents had our own sessions. I was very glad we went. And, I know my daughter was, too. Just another way to transition into the university, in my humble opinion. Plus, it was a good family “get-together.”

Awesome thanks for the input! I think I’m going to go mainly because my parents really want to learn about the school.

For me as a parent it was definitely worth it. There are many forums just for parents and there is a lot of discussion about separation from the kids, etc. One thing that made a HUGE difference for me was the discussion on financial aid. They gave me some info that I did not know about refunds and deadlines and I would not have received a penny of that money back (or it would have been delayed) if I did not attend. This was mission critical financial info that paid for the whole trip. They separate the kids and parents all day and each has their own programs. Some kids don’t like it as you will watch videos outlining the dangers of drinking on campus, the challenges of being away from home for the first time, required study habits and time you need for homework, etc. My kid liked it because he met other students that he made friendships with. He got to see the dorms again and get more familiar with the school. He took the study habit requirements very seriously and is now in the dean’s list. He rarely studied in High School – he just did not need to. Now he cranks out the study hours and it has paid off. College is a totally different game and now that he is in his 3rd quarter it is getting very challenging with all kinds of new material. If you are not open to being told the truth, than skip it.

Awesome that sounds exactly like what my parents want to know! Thanks for the info :)

waste of money and time if u already know the area
