How important is SOAR for an incoming freshman? We live out of state so it would be very inconvenient to have to vist in August and then come back again in September. I’m especially confused because it sounds like freshman schedules are set in a block by thier major department. If so, what is the purspose of SOAR?

Soar is definitely not necessary, but it is helpful. I did not go, but I heard from a lot of people that it was actually kinda boring. I don’t think it’s worth it really to go if you’re out of state. You won’t be missing out on much since it is only two days. I think that they basically explain to you how you register, but you can figure it out on your since it’s very simple. Freshman are assigned 3 classes. Usually 2 major classes and 1 GE. You then have the option of adding another class shortly before school starts. However, this is the only quarter that is done for you. Afterwards you register yourself and pick all your classes. You might want to try and contact your academic advisor in the summer to tell them about your situation.

We are from out of state, and I would say it was not necessary. We made it a vacation and enjoyed our time in SLO, but the “orientation” was definitely not necessary.
