Social aspects of engineering

Ok I'm going to be a mechanical engineering major (most likely) and I was wondering how much of a social life will I be able to sustain in this major because I heard mech.engineering is time consuming. I heard that working with a 5 year plan might help out this problem too. Is there anything wrong with taking a 5 year plan? Or am I just going to end up stuck turning down parties because I have too much work?

There have been zillions of threads about this, often going on for quite a while.

The short answer is that you can still have a fine social life, but if you're at a party-hearty school where most people do not take challenging classes, then yes, you will sometimes have to turn down parties and other social opportunities.

Jessiehl is right.

YES you can have fun as an engineer.
YES you can have a girlfriend/boyfriend/whatever as an engineer.

It all comes down to time management skills.
