social life at 1300

Ok I'm an out of state student looking into Temple. I got invited to the honors program and I am excited. Now my whole life I have been sort of secluded and I want to be able to branch out in college. So how is the social life at 1300? Are kids quiet and keep to themselves or does everyone try to at least have some sort of fun? Is 1300 worth staying in or should i look at other dorms?Help I don't want my college experience to mirror high school.

Hey, I’m a freshman in the Honors Program right now. Living in 1300 is really convenient. I’ve been secluded my entire life, so I know what you mean. I’ve always had a close-knit group of friends, and I tend to keep to myself a lot. The social life in 1300 is pretty good. The RAs and their advisers work to have as many activities as possible. My hall’s RA has planned fun things for us, like ice cream socials, “family” dinners, and other random games to get us to know other people in the hall. There are also events that happen pretty regularly within the building, like a talent contest, movie nights, and even some casual get-togethers with food. It’s always fun. In order to make friends, though, you have to try to get to know other people. You reap what you sow.

Personally, I think 1300 is the nicest dorm on campus. Although we don’t have the dining hall like J&H and we’re not super close to it like 1940, Peabody, or White Hall, I just think the building is the nicest because it’s the newest. I love the suite-style rooms and the advantage of not having communal bathrooms. We also have the Nite Owl in the basement and we’re super close to the SAC. Plus, living with most of the other Honors students is just really convenient because you’ll meet a lot of the people you have class with and who are in the same mindset as you. In my hall alone there are 4 other people who have the same major as me. Hopefully this was helpful!

Thank you so much. I really want to go here but they only gave me a $7500 scholarship but since i’m out of state tuition and dorm is still way too ex*****ive.

I meant expensive

hi kris what is your impression of the social life for freshman not in honors housing? are there organized activities on campus or do most people go into center city? do a lot of people go to the foot ball and basketball games? is partying prevalent?

also what is the best housing for freshman not in honors?

Thanks!

Temple’s social life in general is very strong. There are tons of organized activities going on at all times. There are a lot of student organizations that meet every week, as well as events in popular buildings like the Student Center. If nothing’s going on (usually weekends are pretty dull on campus), Center City’s always an option because it’s a quick subway/bus/bike ride away, but I don’t hear or see too many people going into the city too often. The football and basketball games are kind of hit or miss. Students go crazy for the big games (like football against Penn State or basketball against Duke), but other games that aren’t necessarily as important kind of go under the radar. Going to the games is always fun, though. I’d say partying is pretty prevalent at Temple. I’m pretty sure there are parties every weekend (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday), but not everyone goes out all three days. I don’t know anyone who’s gone out every night or every weekend.

For freshman not in honors, I’d say to try and get a room in 1300 because there are rooms that aren’t saved just for the honors students. If 1300 is full (because it does fill up fast), I’d say to try for a room in 1940 because it’s also very similar. However, 1940 also fills up pretty quickly, so after that I’d have to say it’s a three-way tie between J&H, Peabody, and White Hall. Make sure you have your housing deposit in as soon as possible so that you can have first pick of rooms.

Hopefully this is helpful. Good luck!
