What is the social scene at Cornell? Has it been impacted by the closing of all the bars in the area? Lastly, is it easy is it to get bored while at the school?
My D was very studious in high school and very rarely socialized, but she has really enjoyed her time at Cornell and has a very active social life there. She made friends from her dorm and in her major freshman year, joined a sorority during her sophomore year, and has a steady boyfriend as well. She goes to concerts, has a campus job, volunteers for a club, and attends sorority/fraternity events – all in addition to going to class and doing homework.
Cornell can be intense, but if you make the effort to meet people and join organizations , you will definitely never be bored!
My son has thoroughly enjoyed his first 2 months at Cornell.
He has joined a few clubs/ organizations.
He has made a lot of friends and gets along with his roommates.
He also managed to attend a couple of parties without needing to drink although that is apparently available too.
He has a huge course workload and has to study a lot as well.
There is certainly no time for boredom but yes as in all things you do need to be proactive and join clubs and organizations that are of interest to you and it seems like there are tons of clubs so you will surely find something you like.
Just to add on to everyone’s answers: you don’t need bars to “party” (if that’s what you’re looking for). In fact, the vast majority of parties happen at frat/private houses. Just about every club at Cornell hosts some sort of alcoholic event, even the “dry” clubs.
