I have a quick question for all xavier students. How is the social life at Xavier? Is partying/drinking a big thing at Xavier? How are the dorm rooms for freshman? And finally, how is the food? Thanks for any help with these questions.

Any info… almost one year later?

I’ll jump in. One of my frustrations when S2 was searching for colleges was the lack of activity on this forum.
My aforementioned S2 is a freshman at Xavier. He has managed to carve out a very active social life, but it has required effort. Partying/ drinking in the dorms is not tolerated. It may occur discreetly in rooms, but after witnessing some heavy handed repercussions the first few weeks of school my son decided it was not worth the risk. The good news is it keeps dorm life civilized, the bad news is that it pushes drinking to riskier off campus parties.
Dorm life overall has been a very positive experience for my son. He has met some great guys and is developing nice friendships. I have met several of them and all seemed like all around good guys. His friends appear to be serious students and involved in the Xavier
community. But they are a group that enjoys watching a ball game or having X box marathon too.
Social, professional and athletic clubs are active at Xavier. S2 checked out 7 or 8, and ended up pledging a professional fraternity, playing an intramural sport and working on a political campaign.
Basketball is huge at X and a lot of the social life revolves around it. DS 's roommate is one of those fans that paints himself blue for the game.
While the area surrounding Xavier has little to offer, the University sponsors shuttles to downtown and shopping areas.
X just built a multimillion dollar housing and dining complex. The dining portion is a beautiful set up with stations for pasta, vegan, gluten free, etc. There is a wide variety every day. The quality, according to my son, is average.
Though it wasn’t asked, I will add that DS has found the academics challenging and instruction of a very high caliber.
Good luck in navigating the college selection process.

Thanks Laketime! My D is seriously considering XU and will appreciate the fact that drinking culture does not dominate the social scene. We will visit for an overnight soon and will get a better feel for it then. I really appreciate you answering my post! Thanks again!

Great post laketime! Agree with the lack of posts. I would enjoy reading more about XU from current and prospective students/parents.
Anything else you think of, please post!

Happy I can help. We are not from the Midwest, and knew of no one who went to Xavier. My other son was a third generation legacy at his school, I felt like I was sending this son to Mars!

I found the young man who guided our campus tour to be an outstanding resource. He gave honest answers to tough questions. He gave us a business card after the tour and it included his email. Both DS and I contacted him with questions, and we received prompt and courteous answers. DS even contacted him for advice on picking a dorm, seven months after our tour! My guess is we may have been especially lucky with our tour guide, but what a great for ambassador for X he was!

My son has a medical condition that requires accommodation and I was in contact with the housing office often before he enrolled. Every encounter was professional and satisfactory.
Also, I think the academic advising for freshmen is very strong. While I only have my other son for comparison, Xavier’s freshman advising was equal or better than his Top 20 school.

If my son has a complaint it would be regarding the core requirements. Like all Jesuit schools they require certain classes for graduation. When requirements for one’s major are factored in, it can limit exploration.

laketime - how has the area around the school been? We loved the campus itself and know most of Cincinnati appears good, but some we have talked to mentioned the area surrounding the campus. We are from the midwest but Xavier is still 4.5 hours from us, so not too far and not too close.
My S went to a Jesuit high school (though we are not Catholic) but found the benefits of attending such a school were incomparable. We know he will continue to thrive in such an environment. Happy to hear about the minimal drinking on campus also.

Lake time I would love to hear about dorm recommendations for incoming freshman. I just gave X our deposit $ and we are now faced with the task of choosing a dorm setup for him sight unseen. The schools pictures leave alot to the imagination. Any insights would be extremely appreciated.
pdxpapa, our daughter has 1.5 weeks to decide between XU and another college, but I will share that all the dorms at XU are nice. They are starting a new option just this year of offering LC, or learning communities. XU had a great webinar recently where they explained all the dorms. You might be able to find that webinar on the XU portal for admitted students, or elsewhere.
Where are you from? We are from Indiana. Daughter plans to study business.
@pdxpapa Sorry, son is now a rising senior so I am not on these boards all that much any more.
Regarding dorms; My son was in Kuhlman his freshman year, which he gave lukewarm reviews. But if my memory serves me they remodeled it right after his freshman year. His sophomore year he lived in Buenger which he really liked. Originally he was terribly disappointed he did not get into Fenwick, but Buenger turned out to be as social, but more close knit.
At the end of the day though, the dorm itself does not matter so much. If a kid is open to new experiences, makes an effort to be friendly and follows the golden rule they have an excellent chance to have a good experience.
For anyone else reading this I would like to say that DS has had a very positive experience at Xavier. His relationship with his mentor through The Williams College of Business has been a notable highlight. He has also had very positive, personal and engaging relationships with many of his professors. He has met some terrific people, and has grown intellectually, spiritually and socially. It was a good choice.
