Social Life on Campus

Does anyone know about the social life on campus? Are there parties? Are there places to go and events to see?

My best advice is to purchase the College Prowlr guide to Santa Clara University. They got a ten page section solely on the SCU social scene. It's a really informative read.

Just to give a barometer of the social scene, when i was on campus at an informational session, one of the seniors speaking said "here at santa clara we like to keep a good balance, play hard and party hard." The admissions rep just smiled and nodded and I was waiting for them to say "work hard play hard" but it never came. SC gained major points in my book.

DD is a sophomore at SCU. She says there is PLENTY to do all the time. There is always something going on ON campus, and plenty to do nearby as well. The Caltrain station across the street is very convenient. Public transportation works, but isn't the easiest (she says) or the most convenient...but it's doable and she and her friends do use the bus system. There are some good sports teams (soccer in particular is quite good), and plenty of club activities to become part of.

i have heard that all the parties get raided by like 12
can anyone who actually knows tell me how the party scene actually is

Here is what the students at SCU say about campus strictness on College Pr@$ler

“Campus Safety is way too strict about drinking and stuff. It must be a conspiracy. The Man is always trying to hold me down.”

“They are very strict. Campus Safety, with a few exceptions, has a complex about not being real police officers, which transfers into mistreatment of students. A lot of them have power trips, and don’t act very professionally. I get the sense that they don’t respect the students and take out their frustration on us.”

“The Campus Safety are pretty bad; they tend to be antagonistic towards the students.”

“Depending on how many times you are caught and the amount of drugs you have on you, you could be turned over to SCPD. Drinking wise, they just make you write an essay or a poster, maybe pay a fine. Nothing big at all; they take the drugs more seriously than the drinking.”

“They are really strict, but it’s not like there’s anywhere to party on campus or anything. Get in good with your RA and don’t do anything really stupid, and you shouldn’t have any problems.”

“I know when the Bronco first opened up, no one would even try to use a fake ID there it was so strict. Maybe it’s loosened up some since then. I don’t know, it’s been a while since I had to worry about that stuff.”

“If you’re underage, you need to watch out for the ABC (plain-clothes police officers) outside of Safeway. They usually drive vans, and will run up to the car if they see someone who looks young come out with beer. They got me like two months before I turned 21, and it was a huge ordeal.”

“They’re really strict about drinking on campus, which is kind of lame. It’s college, though, so plenty of it still goes on. When you get caught, the actual punishment usually isn’t bad, but Campus Safety can be real jerks about it when they bust you.”

Keep in mind that this is not really a representative sample but it does give you an idea. Also check out campusdirt.com for stuedent input

Alright, since not many current SCU students actually post up anything here, I'll give some advice from personal experience. I'm just a freshman, so don't take my advice too seriously because my social network isn't that big and I obviously still have many more years here. With that said, the party scene is not always that great. Here's how it goes, at least from my experience, fall quarter is fantastic because there are loads of parties to go to. Winter quarter, so far for me, is REALLY dead, I think because many students stick to studying and it's too cold to go outside. By spring quarter, I hear parties get really exclusive, so it would be a good idea to have friends who know where the party is at. They really are SUPER strict about drinking here, I haven't been caught yet but remember to be very cautious about it. Just don't be stupid about it, use common sense. Overall, sometimes the party scene can be great and sometimes it really sucks. Like last friday night, me and my friends only found one party and it was already too crowded and about to be broken up. Oh and one last CRUCIAL part, parties here get broken up WAYYYY too early! I think the main reason is because a lot of the neighbors complain, so that sucks.
