How is the social life at UVA? I have heard that UVA is a haven for Northern Virginians (rock onnn :P), and that there is little interaction among the races. Is this true?! Because I don't want my mascot to be "the tribe." Jk, but one more thing: Just how conservative is UVA? Any input would be appreciated!

From what I hear, the social life at UVA is based heavily on the frats, which can sometimes be hard to get into if your a guy. (not to join, just to get in to party for the night). UVA, like all VA publics, is definitely full of northern virginians.

I also hear that there's not much interaction between the races... and I'm not really sure why. Probably because most people are coming from schools that are an extremely large percentage white, and they haven't had many friends of other ethnic groups.

Don't hate on the tribe =P

U.Va gave me the email of a current student, to ask her questions about the school. and I asked her about diversity there and she said that the diversity there (meaning there are different people) but people just chose not to intergrate.

Thanks guys! I'm not too happy to have my suspicions confirmed, but I'll probably end up applying anyway. I guess we'll see how that goes...

what is "the tribe?"

"what is "the tribe?""
The tribe is the mascot of the college of william & mary

thank you.

I think it really depends on you. Yeah, there are people who don't want to integrate, but I and my friends weren't among those students. We had people of all races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, religions, etc. in our social circle, and we're all still close friends now. College is what you make of it. You choose your friends and acquaintances.

I agree with Globalist...

it's just unfortunate that more people don't seem to think that way. However, I think the prospect is hurt when the campus is 80% upper middle class white students. Coming from my HS with 50% white ppl, it was shocking to see such a large majority of the campus to be white. People of different ethnicities are fewer and farther between, for me at least. 80% white is significantly more diverse than where some of the kids went to high school though.

SaveHockey - I say apply anyway, then if you get in and decide you don't want to go for whatever reason, you can make that choice. But if you don't apply, you'll never have that option.

Also, just to point out, UVa, and Charlottesville in general, is quite liberal.

I would agree with you that Charlottesville is liberal. However, the surrounding county is conservative and I'd say that UVa would fall more into the moderate range

Social Life at UVA........ Ahh, there are many ways I can articulate my answer but for the most part social life is good. As a first-year out-of stater from the middle of the country, I was initially skeptical on whether I could mix in with fellow first-years, most of whom had connections whether being from NoVa, Richmond or the Tidwater area. However, making friends was not difficult at all as long as you get involved in social organizations/events. Greek life is a major component of the social life at UVA - there's always something going on at the frat houses during the weekend. In fact, things could sometimes get a bit out of hand at those parties but that's another story. Being a black student, racial interaction can be termed as "self-segregating" through my experiences at UVA but there isn't blatant hostility among the races. Personally, I have friends of many races and backgrounds and don't have problems relating to people. You just have to be open to people and I'm sure there won't be a such problem of races isolating from each other.

All I can say is that social life beats academic life. Classes at UVA definitely are not easy to say the least.
