Social Life Questions!!!

I just applied to EA and have a few questions for current students.

Partying: How often do students party on average? I'm okay with twice or three times a week, but do most students party 4+ times?

Greek Life: What is it like? Is it fall or spring rush? Is there intense hazing in the sororities? Are most girls who go greek "stereotypical" blonds, etc?

Students-are people friendly, easy to make friends, etc? Are they mostly bros?

I’ll let a student address that. Needless to say, you’ll have work to do and if you’re a serious student, you should probably get your feet under you academically before you think about partying twice or three times per week. :)

Sorority rush is at the beginning of the spring semester. Hazing is illegal. It’s pretty safe to say that there are blonds, brunettes, and redheads involved in Greek orgs.

There are 14,000 students at UVa and I think most first years are eager to make new friends. I don’t know what a “bro” is.

You can party as much as you choose to. Partying starts on wednesday night and continues straight thru saturday.

Lol what wednesdays now?! Partying/social activities started Thursdays during my time there but definitely continued into procrastination sunday night/monday morning. I don’t drink but I would go out 1-2x per weekend with friends and take a night for myself to do school work (usually Fridays but sometimes Saturdays; I always went out Thursdays). Most people work hard/play hard so there were times when I would hold office hours on the weekends and people (a) would come to my Saturday office hours or (b) would come to office hours Sunday and then go party/partied before hand. So funny. They knew they could pull that with me since I liked them but seriously impaired judgement there. Haha. There is a fine line between a lot of things at college, you’ll find.

I don’t know about sororities and pledging/rushing. I know for the guys, it is not uncommon to have to cut off squirrels’ tails, or to throw your shoes up on power lines after losing your virginity/etc. At Michigan where my brother goes apparently some guys had to eat live goldfish, but I haven’t heard of anything like that at UVA. Also you will find it is not hair color but rather manner of dress and (for some sororities/fraternities) southern-ness that would define a sorority girl over someone else here. I do know you have to get all dressed up in short skirts when it is freezing cold out and get yourself down to Rugby Rd in heels, which was the only major complaint I remember hearing from girls who rushed.

If you search old threads you’ll find lots of other information about greek organizations, rushing, and making friends here.

Thank goodness. i almost had a moment at the mention of hurting animals.
We always see girls walking down in boots…holding their shoes. Someone told me they switch into their nice shoes on the porches of the houses.

I don’t think that’s all that crazy…I do it everyday in the winter. :)

I don’t know how someone could be out partying 4 nights a week and be able to keep up with the work. Remember, you also have to do well enough in a subject and prerequisites to be accepted into a major. I’m guessing there are some students who are left in a lurch and can’t find a department willing to take them for a major.

It is one thing to spend too much time partying when you should be studying. It is also a matter that too much drinking etc affects your short-term memory and your ability to concentrate, as well as keeps you from getting a good night’s sleep. There were more than a couple Saturday mornings when my fraternity brothers and I had so much “brain fog” that all we could do was lay on a couch and watch cartoons. That is OK one or two weekend days, but it is not a good thing at a Thursday morning test.

Charlie,

I party 4 nights of the week and am doing well (at least thus far). If I have a test the next day I don’t go out, but otherwise Wednesday thru Saturday is usual.

I have no idea how some people can even do Thursdays. My friends and I just do Friday and Saturday and Sunday-Thursdays are for work. That’s just us though.

Just because someone does party 4 times a week doesn’t mean that they don’t finish all their other work. I know kids who party all the time and pull off As in tests/quizzes.

Maybe it’s just my E-school friends but I don’t see many of them party. Maybe once every other week or so. Except they do have Trigon, which I hear is amazing. One of my friends in the E-school has webwork due FRIDAY and SATURDAY nights. :/

As a pre-med first year, I started the year by going out once or twice a weekend. Now that I have a solid grip on my grades, me and my friends will usually hit the frats 3 times a week, but usually never more than 3 times. Its all about what you have time for and how you can balance it with your studies. Plenty of my good friends will go out once if at all in a given weekend. Wednesdays are also bigger for upper classmen who can get into bars (and people who use other means to get in).
