My daughter is seriously considering applying early to F&M and was wondering about the social life at F&M. It seems students stay on campus mostly or is there a "college town"? Is there a lot to do? Do you have to be into drinking to have a social scene?

I attended F&M for my freshman and sophomore years between 2005-2007 before transferring out, so it is possible that things have changed since then. During my stay, there was virtually no social scene outside of fraternity/sorority events, which revolve heavily around drinking. Lancaster is not small but there isn’t much there to attract students and I definitely wouldn’t call it a college town.

My son is a freshman. I just returned from Family weekend. First of all Administration seems to be addressing this head on with alot of “counter programming.” More importantly my son is very satisfied with non-alcoholic events and is happy with his social life. Definitely NOT a suitcase college. I was pleasantly surprised with Lancater. There is a free shuttle from campus to downtown and also to the local mall. Hope this helps. You should visit to get a real sense of the place.

Thanks Triguena, that is refreshing to know. D loves F&M and the drinking scene was one of the few negatives we were concerned about… Going there again in a few weeks…

Hey everyone,
I am a current Freshmen at F&M and I have to say that I love it there. F&M is offering something brand new this year called the Lancaster Loop ([Lancaster Loop Shuttle](http://loop.fandm.edu/)). Every friday it offers a free shuttle to the mall, saturday morning to central market, and on sunday night to the movies. Its worked out very well so far. As to on campus activities, if you get involved with a club, you can have constantly something to do. The CEC (campus entertainment committee) offers many different activities on the weekends as well.

As a freshmen I tend to stay mostly on campus, especially because I do not have a car. There is always something to do on the weekends, and your weekday nights are times for studying.

Drinking does happen at F&M, but no more than any other college campus. I have friends that drink and friends that do not drink, and there is no huge divide between the two. If you do not want to drink, there is no pressure to at F&M, which is something I really like. Frats/sororities are not the only thing to do on the weekends, especially because after your first semester freshman year, you are not allowed into frat parties unless you are a member of that frat.

F&M is a great college to go to because it combines the feel of a college campus with the town of Lancaster. A 60,000+ and growing city. There is always something to do on campus, and if something is going on in Lancaster, F&M usually provides transportation to the events, as well as planned trips to New York and DC. Come visit, go on a tour, talk to students to get a real feel of F&M.

zeroxe -where did you transfer to and can you compare the new place with F&M…

My friend goes to the college. She does not drink at all, ans she is in a sorority and goes to parties every weekend. If you go out, you do not have to drink. If you choose to stay in, you definitely will miss out on meeting some great people. Drinking on college campuses are a norm. You will find it at every single college you go to. Do not base a decision on what others do such as drinking.
