Social/ Party Scene

I understand that New Orleans offers a party scenenearly every night of the week. Are frat parties big with students? Are parties on campus prevalent? How lenient is campus security about alcohol? What are most of the students like? Preppy, jocks, nerds? How serious are students about academics?

You can find a party at nearly all schools (except maybe very small ones and/or very specialized ones, like military or highly religious) every night, and Tulane is no exception. Obviously, it goes into a higher gear starting Thursday night, and into Friday and Saturday. Tulane has a very active Greek scene, about 30% of the students.

The policy on alcohol is evolving. Everything I heard these last few months leads me to believe that they are going to get much stricter about openly drunk students on campus, and about the presence of alcohol with underage students. Obviously this can only go so far, like any campus. They have always been strict about drugs, but used to be fairly lenient about alcohol. This year will be interesting to watch to see how the new policies affect things.

Yes, the students are preppy and jocks and nerds, and a few other categories. I do not think you will find a dominent type at Tulane, it is quite diverse in that regard.

Tulane is routinely described as the “work hard, play hard” school. Very cliche, but in this case probably a good description. The vast majority of students are serious about academics and most want to go on to med school, law school, and top grad schools. It is extremely easy to find a niche that is ultra academics focused, or one that is serious but not quite so intense, or one that is a bit closer to 50-50.

In virtually all the areas you ask about, you won’t find Tulane to be extremely different from many other schools it is normally compared to. The things that make it different are the setting (New Orleans), the balance between being very undergraduate oriented yet having numerous high level research opportunities, and the commitment to community service, and just an overall attitude and feel that you either get or you don’t. Visit, stay a couple of nights, and see for yourself.

Also there was a thread a while back about the 100 best things about Tulane. Find it, it might give you some insight also.

I agree with fallen chemist. If I had to make some overall observations about Tulane , I would say the students are warm and welcoming, academically motivated yet not cut-throat. There are plenty of opportunities to go out and have fun when you want to. There is an opportunity for great relationships with professors due to the small class sizes, and a great relationship with the city due to the students’ ongoing role in helping to support it economically and rebuild it from the ground up. There is the excitement of change in the air- from renovating and upgrading campus buildings to hiring new faculty and improving every program on an on-going basis. It’s a great place to be right now.

As far as the drinking goes, it seems as though they are trying to crack down in order to ensure the safety of the students. But like every college campus, I am sure there will always be parties. With all that studying, students do need to blow off some steam.

Really well said, bff.
