I'm deciding to attend wooster this fall, but I'm kind of worried about the social scene. I'm not a party person, drinker or anything. I've heard Wooster has it's own bar on campus, which is a bit bothering for a person like me. I've also heard students do get badly drunk. Would I fit into such a place? It's not a very serious botheration that should affect my decision to attend, but still.

Welcome to Wooster! I sent you an IM…

You’ll fit in fine. There is one bar on campus (the Underground or UG) but it is really to try and increase the amount of people who don’t drink and drive since bars are fairly limited compared to students who choose to go to school in a big city. I didn’t take a single drink until I was 22 and that includes 3 years at Wooster. Some students do get drunk – very drunk – but you’ll get that at every campus. I currently live on a dry campus and people STILL get horribly drunk.

Luckily, Woo realizes that their school is in the middle of no where, so they bring in loads of entertaining things to do. I spent my Friday nights watching movies with my friends, going out to dinner, making dinner with limited ingredients and utensils in the basements of the dorms, playing Apples to Apples and Bingo in Lowry, going to attend student group performances. You’re not going to be bored – your friends will keep you busy and sober.

Welcome to Woo.

Thanks Rachacha and AUTransfer! This is such a relief! Now, I welcome myself to Wooster! :)

trust me, you will definitely not be alone in your choice to not drink (or smoke if that applies as well)! :)

i don’t drink or smoke, for a variety of reasons from health to religious, but i certainly don’t feel pressured to do so. there are also a variety of activities and things to do that don’t involve any of those things. there is also a program house that you can apply to live in, but that would only apply after your first year hear at Wooster. it’s called Gable House, and it’s chemical-free. they also have a sweet coffee bar. if you’re interested in something like that, look it up once you get to campus. Gable hosts a variety of activities/programs during the week(end), such as student performers and a halloween pumpkin carving night.

lamiller2008: Great to know there are many others who don’t drink or smoke! Those are some nice alternatives. Can’t wait to come to wooster this fall!

lamiller–Are you a rising sophomore or junior? Time flies by so quickly, I get confused sometimes. :)

i will be a junior this fall!

Time for Junior IS! What’s your major? Have you started to think about your IS topic yet? I’m excited for you!

yep!

Music Education

my Junior IS is my Junior Recital (which are half-recitals of 30-45 minutes). i’ve already got one piece that i will be doing for sure, which i actually just played on our studio recital in April that went really well and i loved.

Wow–you’re in a small, wonderful program. I believe there were two music education graduates in the Class of 2010. Are you a pianist?

nope, unfortunately! X_X

flutist.

Sorry to intrude on this conversation, but lamiller2008 would you be able to tell me about the music ed program at Wooster? I’m definitely considering applying, but I haven’t heard much about the program and am kind of nervous about the fact that it’s literally in the middle of nowhere.
