How is the social scene at Drew? What kind of people go there (ex: preppy kids who aren't too accepting and have a lot of money, hipsters who want to stand out, or a mix?)? Are the people there friendly?

How are the weekends? What do students tend to do for fun? Are there a lot of parties? If so, are they out of control, boring, or in the middle? Do students ever take buses into town to hang out? If so, what is there to do in town? Is there a lot of activities to do on campus?

Are students at Drew open? Are they just looking for hookups and drunk nights, or are they more interested in personalities and long lasting relationships (friends and love)?

Thank you for any of the numerous questions you can answer... I really appreciate the honesty.

I am in my final year at Drew, and what I love most about it is the community that it fosters. Drew is not a standard liberal arts college with one certain “type” of student - they all blend and coexist here. You definitely have your hipsters, div 3 jocks, new england preps, california kids, etc. While some students are extremely wealthy, a large amount of students are on some sort of financial aid. For a school with about 1,600+ people, it is hard to characterize the student body. I find that most students I meet are interesting, intelligent, and passionate.

The weekends at Drew depend on what you like. There are programs on the weekend where students can attend movies, dances, trips to DC, etc. There is also a drinking, party culture yet it does not dominate and can be avoided. Parties tend to be held in the “suites” where there is the most space to hold a party. If you want to find a party on the weekend, you can. Is the party culture like Rutgers or a bigger school? No, but you can get your thrills. There are a ton of clubs on campus that host events throughout the week as well.

Some students take advantage of the proximity of NYC - the train is about $22 round trip, and it takes 45-50 minutes to get into NYC. The train station is approximately 10 minutes away from campus. There is also Morristown, which has more restaurants, bars, etc than Madison. Madison is a cute, quaint town with its quirks. You can find things to do if you find them.

Drew is definitely a hidden gem, and I think it’s a great school if you want a community where you can stand out, get a great education, meet interesting, dynamic people, and enjoy the beauty of the campus and its surroundings.

My son (grad 2010) found it quiet but nice. If you are apathetic and just complain about things, you will find them, but there was always something going on. He wasn’t the “have to busy every moment” type so he didn’t mind the slower pace. He belonged to 2 clubs and worked and enjoyed the plays and shows on campus along with some of the discount trips.
He did feel bored at times, but overall, loved his experience there, the nice students and very helpful professors.
