social security and worksheet A

hi. this may seem like a dumb question, but i will ask it anyway.

i currently collect social security disability and SSI benefits. when i come up to worksheet A on the FAFSA it mentions "social security benefits (such as SSI)". i was confused by the wording and i called 18004fedaid and spoke to a rep about this. i asked whether or not SSI benefits should be included in the same category as social security benefits since they are 2 very different programs and if so should i report them on the FAFSA. after being on hold for about 2 minutes she told me that she did not know for sure.

now i am asking anyone who apparently knows more than that young lady i talked to to chime in. that includes any member who is an FAA.

Worksheet A is where you add in UNTAXED Social Security benefits received. So if you or the student received untaxed social security benefits during '07, whey wouldn't be included when you reported your AGI in an earlier question. But they get reported here-- FAFSA does consider this as usable income.

Good news is that benefits paid to the parent on the child's behalf get counted as parent's income (on Parent's Worksheet A), which is better formula-wise than showing it on the Student's Worksheet.

So the portion of the SS benefits that you get that's taxable is already included in the AGI- don't include it on the Worksheet. The portion of the SS benefits that's untaxed goes on Worksheet A.

For worksheet A you include any social security benefits that are not included in your AGI.
