Hi everyone,

I'm going to be applying to UC's in the Fall and am deliberating whether I should apply as either a social welfare or sociology major to Cal.
Social welfare is an impacted major and I've heard only about 20 transfer students get in. Yet, many people also apply as a different major (such as sociology) and then switch to social welfare, though there's no guarantee there will be a spot for you, which is why I'm uncertain to use that route.
Is any one on this site planning to apply as a social welfare major, or has anyone already transferred to Cal as a social welfare major who can provide some advice and their stats?

Thank you

I would recommend applying as a social welfare major, sociology appears to be a more popular major and therefore should be more competitive.

People say they’re stats are similar to UCLA so you can look at those if you’d like.

Thanks for the input @Matt4200!

Yeah that’s true. But while sociology is definitely a more popular choice, it is not listed as an impacted major, whereas social welfare is.
But I will take your thoughts into consideration

The reason social welfare admits so few students is because very few apply. It actually has a 26.7% transfer admit rate, which is above the university average, and I believe around the same as sociology. It doesn’t matter which majors are “impacted” (it may make it more difficult to actually declare once you are admitted, but you should be fine). So if social welfare is your major of choice, apply for that.

Here are the admit rates by major:

Hey! I just got into Berkeley this year. I applied as a history major, but changed my mind and wanted to do social welfare. When I showed up to my orientation day, I talked to the social welfare major advisor. He had me fill out a short form, and I declared my new major that day! It was so simple and easy. I know it’s an impacted major, but that didn’t seem to matter much. Just make sure you have the prereqs done: Intro to Sociology and Intro to Statistics.

@music1990 that makes sense. Thanks for the pdf! I had only come across the 2012 admit rates, with social welfare at about 14%, so the 2013 rates are much more promising!

@ethiebold congrats on your acceptance to Cal! It’s great to hear that you were able to switch your major with no problem. Yes, I have completed the prereqs and am in the process of completing the recommended courses.

Thanks again for everyone’s input. I have decided to apply as a social welfare major :)
