Societies/teaing

I've read all the threads I could find on here about societies/teaing, and I'm aware that they sort of get a bad rep on campus. However, I think I will still attend a few teas just to see what it's like because I'm kind of curious and the idea actually doesn't turn me off that much (but who knows?). I've read that the membership fees are quite expensive (some more than others), but could not find any info about it on any of the websites.

I don't really come from one of those "rich, white girl" families (one of the stereotypes of societies I've read about), so I'm a bit concerned about membership dues. Do society girls actually TALK about it before you apply? Like during the teas? Or is it one of those things where you don't actually find out unless you straight-up ask them or until after you get accepted? Does anyone have any straightforward answers for me? Is it a monthly thing? A semesterly thing? And how much exactly (I know it won't be the same for every society)?

Also, if anyone has experience whether with teaing or being part of a society, please share!
I'm especially curious about:
1. the friend-making aspect (whether all the members of a society are actually as close with each other as they seem in the photos)
2. time-management (whether members have enough time for schoolwork, other clubs, other friends, etc)
3. hazing (do initiates have to do crazy things (I read about the costumes)? will the things they have to do take up so much time that they won't be able to have other friends or participate in other clubs? other things like that.)

Thanks!
