Sociology 1 with Swidler

I'm planning to take it with her for Fall 2008 and I was wondering if anyone knew anything about her and the class (lecturing style, interesting/boring, grading easy/hard, usefulness of discussion section, etc.). On ratemyprofessor.com I have heard good things about her, but I'm interested to know if anyone wants to add or give their personal take on it. Thanks.

P.S. Anyone else planning to take this class? Always nice to know people going into it before it starts.

bump up...

she's the best :)

Can someone elaborate a little more please?

yea im interested too

can someone please comment on the difficulty of this course? how much reading? curve? etc thanks much

Like santabanta, looking for answers.

i think CC ppl are too math/sci oriented to answer such "humanities" questions

I took her last fall. She is a very passionate professor that lectures well, but i felt the material was a bit too abstract (I'm a psychology and IB major). I lost interest about half way through the class but that is not necessary her fault more as I had a terrible GSI. Your grade is based on your final (40%), 2 essays, and midterm that is barely worth anything (like 10%). You get your grade from your GSI so who you get is important. There is a good amount of reading (but not like an english class or anything) but I stopped reading after a couple of weeks. Bottom line, if you can write decently and BS well, then you will do fine. I got an A in the class. Just remember that everything leads to inequality!

Thanks for the information badclones. So would you say that a good/easy GSI is very important for a good grade in the class? & would you say someone who is not too interested could make it through? Also, how long are the 2 essays and how are the midterm and final set up?

any info on Sociology 3AC?

sometimes i feel like you should just find out for yourself. like experience the class by yourself. nobody told me anything besides what i found out thru ratemyprof about swidler. and i got an A.

bump up...

bump up...

Does anyone know what percentage you have to at least get in order to get an A-/A in the class? Is it a 90 cutoff or is it more generous, like around 87?
