Sociology? Help!!

Hey guys. I'm off to college next year and I'm mainly looking at Belmont Univ. in TN. My sister goes there, as well as my girlfriend, and as an added bonus - I get to stay at my own house rather then a dorm :).

I would like to do a Criminal Justice major, I'm interested in working for the F.B.I. or any type of Federal Investigator. But the closet thing to a CJ major is Sociology with an emphasis on CJ... what does this mean?

I've heard some negative stereotypes about the Sociology major:
- It's for jocks who don't want to put effort into academics.
- It's a "girly" major.
- People are viciously liberal.
- It's a "useless" major

so yeah... what do you guys think? Would this be the best thing for becoming a detective/F.B.I. agent? I'd LOVE to go to a school where my family is near and my girlfriend is as well, so this is a big deal to me... or should I major in something else? My career plans are to become a Police Detective out of college and then, apply for F.B.I.

Sociology is an AWESOME major! (I’m not saying this because I’m biased lol). I was initially a cultural anthropology but switched to sociology b/c it was EXACTLY what I looked for in a major.
Sociology isn’t really a BullS major at all. I know people who are terrible at it. It is def. not a useless because it can be applied to everything! ESPECIALLY if you are going into a field that deals with people to people/people to society interactions (which you seem to be doing).
I also happen to be pre-med and I know the knowledge from sociology will help me out with my patient population in order to understand how and why society, culture, etc. effects them.

So when you get to school, just take an Intro to Sociology with a good teacher and see if you like it. Sociology isn’t for everyone. Especially if you are not really a people person/don’t care how or why society effects the way we behave.

Thanks! Anyone doing criminal justice?

Hi 300Suns,

Belmont seems to be a pretty highly ranked school for the region, but I’d still seriously reconsider any majors within the social sciences.

For instance, I completed a triple major in anthropology, philosophy, and sociology at a lesser university than Belmont and I’ve still seen no return on my investment even after a year. And while this may be based on the average nature of the school I attended, I suspect a great deal of my lack of employability has to do with the junk majors I completed.

You might reconsider doing a double major in computer science and accounting if you really want a job with the FBI. That way you’ll have a practical skillset before embarking in your career.

Good luck.

Sociology all depends on how deep/what you intend to do with it. It is fairly easy to fall into a government position doing social work with such a degree. I would suggest, if your goal is to do Soc. AND get paid, to pair it with statistics, with an eye towards graduate school.
