People really say soda? I've never met anyone who uses the word "soda". Everyone I know calls it pop. And it's weird because I've read that more people use "soda" than "pop". I swear this country has like 4 or 5 different countries within it. Everywhere you go is so different.

I’m in California and everyone here calls it “soda,” I promise. (I’m Southern Californian, not too sure about NorCal, but I don’t think that would change…)

This is blowing my mind.

In the Northeast, everyone calls it soda. “Pop” sounds like something from a 60’s sitcom here. Are you from the Midwest?

In the South, it’s all “coke”.

I think “pop” sounds weird.

People really say “pop”? :P

@lockn: Every once in a while someone will say “coke,” but usually they’re referring specifically to Coca-Cola.

I’ve always said “soda.”
“Pop” sounds so bizarre to me.

Wow, I can’t believe this lol. I guess you learn new things every day.

I wonder what the “other” is on that map…

I want to learn more region specific words. I like this kind of stuff. I’ve learned from online games that a lot of west coasters use “hella”. I’m trying to think of some more…

lol there is a soda enclave in Austin.

I say soda, and I live in Norcal. Ive never heard of “pop” though. It sounds so old fashioned.

I love it when people say pop, it’s so 1940. And fizzy drink, I had a british teacher who used to say that all the time, it’s adorable.

Everyone I know says “soda.” I’ve never heard anyone call it pop lol.

You Chicagoans and your dialects.

That map is interesting. Most people say pop around here (Illinois). If I make a conscious effort, I try to say soda because I like the sound of it more.

pop = popular music down here in california.

I Think.

I call it pop too, and I was born in Cleveland and now live about 30 mins from downtown. I think it’s a northern midwest thing- Ohio, Illinois, Indian, and Michigan. And I think soda sounds so incredibly old-fashioned. It reminds me of the 50s.

yes, people in central new york call ‘pop’ soda, but just two or three hours away in Buffalo, I hear “pop,” all the time at restaurants.
