solid act, low gpa applying to top schools

hey! please chance me for U of C, Tufts, Barnard, Wellesley, Macalester, Reed, Georgetown, NYU, American, Northeastern, & Northwestern.

caucasian female from a decent public school. not too competitive, but sends a few kids to top schools each year.

GPA: 3.65ish/4 UW, 5.3/5.6 W
Rank: top 10%
ACT: 33 superscore (36 E, 28 M, 36 R, 33 S), 32 highest composite
APs: APUSH (5), Psych (predicted 5), Gov (predicted 5), Lang & Comp (predicted 5).

I've got a rigorous schedule now and am planning to take 5 AP classes next year (Bio, Calc AB, Spanish, Euro, Lit & Comp).

ECs: co-founded 2 clubs. on exec board of a charity event that brings in over $90,000 each year. on exec board of 3 clubs (2 of which were the ones that i co-founded). in a variety of activities ranging from community service to politics to a yoga club. i have kept myself busy every summer w/ jobs & interviews (nothing fancy, though).

Athletics: LOL NO

Awards: national merit commended, will definitely get AP scholar w/ honor once i get my scores, NHS, spanish honor society (btw, do those last 2 count as awards or as ECs?)

Hook: LOL NO

oh, yeah, and my GPA has a strong upward trend. freshman year was a disaster.

Get your math ACT up… 28 is pretty low.

Anyway, your EC’s are pretty weak, so I think Tufts, NYU, Georgetown, and Northwestern are reaches (not high reaches though). I don’t know about the rest.

You have a good shot for sure at Northeastern and American, OK shot at the rest. The clubs are good, but there’s nothing on your application that really sets you apart from the other thousands of applicants.

Good luck !

thanks! do you think it’s possible to make up for lack of a hook with amazing essays? writing is my biggest strength so i know that my essays will be good.

Writing good essays are a huge part of admissions and are one of the many factors why test scores aren’t everything. I believe ACT is not superscored at most colleges, so try to get math up more. U of C (Chicago) will be a reach, but still possible. Northwestern not as much but Uchicago and Northwestern will be your 2 reaches.

You definitely have shots at them though!
