Hi all

So I recently just accepted my offer of admission to McGill and, with deadlines fast approaching for residence selection, I'm trying to weigh the pros and cons between my two favoured apartment-style residences: Solin Hall and Greenbriar.

Now, of my considerations, there are several important points to note. Most importantly, I should mention that my primary reason for living in residence first year is the need to network/make friends I can rely on in a university far away from home. Otherwise, I am well looking forward to saving money by occupying an off-campus apartment second year and beyond. Which is precisely why I'm looking into an apartment style residence for U0. So I can save some money by cooking for myself.

Judging by the standard of affordability, Greenbriar wins by a long shot. Certainly, there's no question that the majority of Greenbriar's apartments offer much more personal space for much less cost than Solin. HOWEVER, one big detractor grabs my attention; from everything I've read, the Greenbriar Apartments are notoriously antisocial. Although this conjecture may not be as practical a consideration as cost, I must confess that it is a bit unsettling. After all, the whole reason I'm living in residence first year is so I can connect with other McGill freshman. If I'm going to live in Greenbriar, and Greenbriar is as antisocial as everyone says, I may as well live in an off-campus apartment right off the bat!

Regardless, there are a few other considerations I've had in mind. The most obvious one is that Greenbriar's location beats out Solin's with impunity. At least with regards to its proximity to classes (I am a bit of a night owl). Still, I have heard that Solin is much closer to the affordable Atwater Market and that may be a big factor in helping ease the process of efficient grocery shopping weekly. Also, I have heard that Solin does have alot more amneties (e.g. TV lounge, games room) but that is much more of a bonus than a major concern.

Though I've spent my fair share of time browsing Residences Overview ? Unofficial McGill Guide , I am, admittedly, much more interested in what you guys have to say about the pros and cons you can point out with regards to these two apartment-style residences.

Thanks in advance for any help you're able to give!
