I have done some research on the residences in McGill and have narrowed down my choices to three. Solin, Greenbriar, McConnell

Are you a newly admitted undergraduate student? May I request you to share the rationale behind your selection?

Yup. I am a newly admitted student. I made my decisions based on the cost and the location. Greenbriar apartment is in the middle of the campus and to be exact, it is quite near to Rutherford Physics Building. Solin Hall offers a nice and spacious room and is near to the grocery stalls.

I'm partial to Douglas, to be honest. Coming from your standard American university family, I feel like the "traditional" dorm experience is a must, so that excludes the MORE homes + Solin and Greenbriar. As for cost, I've reasoned that loans are going to be taken out regardless, so I don't mind a few extra thousand on the tab 4 years down the road, if it means a great experience (not that a great experience can't be had in Solin, Greenbriar, or the MORE's).

I think my 3 are Solin, Greenbriar and MORE. Not sure about more because i havent heard too many good things about it. hhhcce, if you know could you please tell me what the other fees are for the apartment style rez such water etc.

All utilities, except phone and internet service are included in the rent of the
apartment. Most students just have their own cell phones. The internet
is about $35 CDN per month.

how much does wireless internet cost? i think i saw thats about $2/month. NOT SURE THOUGH! looked this up a while back ... :(

It depends on what you mean by wireless internet.

If you're talking about one of those internet services offered by the telephone companies where you can plug in the modem anywhere you go, the costs/month are as follows:

Bell: $45 (512 kbps) / $60 (3 mbps)

Rogers: $24.95 (128 kbps) / $49.95 (1.5 mbps)

If you're talking about those cards from the telephone companies which you plug into your laptop and use to access the internet, it all really depends on the company.

Bell offers the Kyocera KPC-650 Passport for $29.95 with a 3 year contract and the following data plans found here:

Rogers offers the Sierra Wireless Aircard 860 and the Option Wireless GTMAX PC Card both for $49.99 and the following plans:

Glendalais: It probably depends on each person and how much they're willing to pay, but which one service, in your opinion provides the best service, speed and price? I'd like to save money, of course, but also have quick speed internet access.

I would pick Bell, just on the basis that they have a near-monopoly on telecommunications in Quebec (I have never met anyone in Montreal who did not use Bell for their home telephone service, and only 1 person who used Rogers for their cell phone service).

They tend to have pretty good speed since they have infrastructure across Quebec. The prices though.....well, they're what they are.

I think I should also mention that, just by visiting their stores in the greater MTL area, I would say that Bell does probably have better English-language support in Quebec than Rogers. However, that's a subjunctive opinion, and may have no basis in fact.

I was under the impression there's a lottery for halls. Isn't that the case?

Meshuggener: Yep, that's what it is, as long as you pay your deposit and put the housing places in order before June 15th- in 4 days.

Done and done. I'm indifferent really as to which hall I go to - although I guess I'm kinda pulling for New Rez - I'm just hoping I get a single room.
