I'm going into my junior year in college and have ran into a problem. For the past two years i have qualified as an independent student due to the fact my mother was denied for the parent plus loan. She went to fill out the form today, and lo and behold, was somehow accepted. She cannot take it out due to having a very low income.

What do i do now? I mean i don't have good grades (i was ill last semester and only pulled a 2.5) so scholarships are out. And the only route i can think of at the moment is to do a private loan.

Are private loans hard to get? I'm 21 and have no job (nor will i when i'm in school). Do they work similar to the fedural loans?

Where exactly did mom “fill out the form” ? – because that might be the spot to start to have this end up in your best interests. For instance, if it was at a bank, perhaps you should go back in with her and ask to speak with the next level manager. You may have to be blunt about her ability to re pay (and the loans effect on your status). Basically it sounds like it would be best (for you) if she was denied – and perhaps some kind soul was thinking it was best if she was approved (which, most of the time, is the case).

If it was at a bank, collect more information. Has her credit score changed? What made it different this time around?

Please be careful. Talk to your college fin aid staff and to other independent students to understand why it is that your mom is supposed to take loans (that it sounds like she can’t pay). Don’t accept the first answer – keep digging until you understand the whole process and evaluation method. Good luck!
