Im a junior looking into colleges and i have a plan of several reach colleges i plan on applying to...but i'm trying to find a few safety schools to make sure i get into college. I dont feel like typing all my stats right now, so ill just leave it at i'm chinese, my ACT is a 29, PSAT a 200, just took the SAT should be around 2100 and i have several extracurriculars including qualifying for State in swimming and being named a scholastic-all american swimmer, and placing ninth in a voice of democracy state speech contest.

All i need is a few good schools that i would be most probable in getting into...

so far all i have is Univ. of illinois- urbana champ. and case western reserve...I'm considering NYU, Lehigh, Bradeis, but i dont think their safeties ...

chansky, please tell me about scholastic all american swimmer designation. As far as I know such can only be applied for through
National Assoc of Interscholastic HS Swim coaches and is only designated at the end of Senior year (8th semester). What org designated All American?

If you are considering Case Western and Brandeis, you should also look into Univ. of Rochester (Carnegie Mellon too but that's not a safety). Other schools considered "safety" for high caliber students may be Tulane, Boston U and U. of Mich. Once you decide which schools seem most promising, you must have contact with the schools. Try to visit -meet with admission counselor--if you are going to swim at college, contact coach. BUT I UNDERSTAND sports recruiting is a whole other issue so get some facts from knowledgeable people on this board before you contact coaches. If you cannot visit the school, e-mail the admission office and ask if they will be in your area. Most colleges will tour around the country in the fall to meet with students. My d applied and was accepted to U of Rochester. I know they did NYC interviews in the fall. CMU was also in NYC in the fall. You have to show a sincere interest in the school-I believe this helps your chance for admission. Assuming you get 2100 on your SAT's and you are in the top 10-15%, I think you will be successful at Lehigh-Case Western-U of R and some of the other schools you are considering. Good luck. Also--you did not mention what state you are from--so I suggest you apply to your own state University. Hopefully, that is a true safety for you. If you live in Va. NC. Mich or Wisc, you're a lucky guy. We're from NY. Somehow Suny-Binghamton doesn't do it for a lot of NY kids.

Hi Chanski, Yes, I'm aware of that. But that is not All American designation, academic or otherwise. You refer, I believe, to USA Swimming Scholar Athlete award which is available to those who maintain gpa and compete in at least one event at the sectional level or above. Congrats anyway! I was wondering since my D is a swimmer as well. Academic All American is based solely on grades and "participation" on Varsity swim team for a HS. Swimming All American is based on times.

Kenyon has very good swim team and it's academically excellent. Not sure if it would be considered a match or safety for you but you should definitely investigate.

I would consider Case Western, Brandeis, BU, Rochester, Tulane as all MATCHES for you: you should get in based on your projected SAT's, EC and assuming your GPA and class rank correspond to your SATbecause your stats are average for who gets in. But the process has enough vagaries that you can never be certain about an individual school. On the other hand if yu apply to enough matches you can be pretty certain of getting into one. I consider schools a SAFETY if your stats significantly exceed the school's average admitted kids. I don't think that any of the above are safeties by that criteria. But you really only need to apply to one or at most 2 safety schools. Northeastern as OneMom suggested would be a safety. So would DePaul or SUNY-Binghampton. Are considering all parts of the country or would you preferr to stay closer to home in the midwest?

Chanski - are you intending on swimming in college??? If so - do you intend to consider D1 schools or D3's - and are you aware of the need to register with the NCAA clearinghouse if you are intending to swim D1 or D2??

mama... chanski is correct about USA Swimming Scholastic All American ....my d was awarded USA Swimmings Scholastic All American Award last year and also qualifies this year....the following information is from the application that she filled out this year....and the application was downloaded directly from the USA Swimming website.....
.

I am curious to know more about the award you mentioned.....
USA Swimming Scholar Athlete....could you let me know where I can find out more info about this award.....thanks.....

Chanski... If you are considering swimming in college you "may"
have your hook.....for your reach schools....
.
If you were a Scholastic All American, you must have swam in a sectional meet and have good grades...so you are very recruitable...

My d has been in touch with Yale...the coaches are wonderful.....there are time requirements and test score requirements to be recruitable.

You must have at least a 1300 old SAT and 1950 new SAT or a 30 composite on the ACT.

Times necessary for woman...short course yards.

NYU has a womens swim team.

If you are going to swim, I can suggest many colleges if you will share your times.

Also listen to JeepMOM..now is the time to register with the clearinghouse

Hi Birdie, I'm told that USA Scholar Athlete is now called Academic All American Team! Good news as D is also eligible. she also will receive scholar athlete award this year from our lsc. Just had a chat with our HS coach who tells me that the only All American (academic or swimming) designation that will appear on HS pool banner will be from
NISCA. He states that All American is designated at the college level by national coaches assoc and so is HS. The All American swimming designation represents top 100 times per event in public schools and top 30 times nationwide private? There are also "consideration" time cuts. Oh well, one more discussion in the ongoing series between HS and USA swimming. We know several swimmers who are headed for Yale this year. Great swimmers and great people. They too felt the coaches were wonderful! Thanks.

mama....I am glad to hear your daughter qualifies for Academic All American....it really is an honor...she will receive two awards.....one is for her and the other is for her high school.. .which was a nice surprise.....you have until August 1st to send in your application...the boys send it to one person and the girls send it to another person...so be careful when reading the application......you can download the application from the USA swimming website.....you have to send verification of times and send an official hs transcript....... Tell your d congrats...it isn't easy balancing swimming, school and sleep..... my d goal is to receive the award all four years....two down and two to go.....! Take care....

I'm thinking about swimming div. I at a competitive school, i don't really know how qualified i am..
my 50 freestlye time is a 22.4, i should be at a mid 21 during high school season.
My 100 freestyle time is a 49.60...i'll be at a a 48 low during my h-s season.

I really don't know where to go and what to do in being recruited. I don't really know anyone who's gone through the process. All the info given is amazing, thanks

Oh yeah, i'm second in my class out of 500 (public h-s) and my gpa is a 4.0/4.0 weighted, 5.8/6.0 weighted.

Question: will swimming help my admissions to a school that has only D-III sports? I know i won't have that "push" as a D-I recruit would, but how much, if any, would swimming help in admissions?
