Some grade issues...

Hello CC,

So throughout high school I’ve always been a B/C student in math classes, but all the math classes that I’ve gotten C’s in I have retaken and have gotten A’s. I’m currently in my senior year and I am guaranteed to get a C in my calc class, and there’s no way I can retake this semester since it’s my last year.

How negatively will this affect my early application colleges? I’ve already applied to every school I want to go to. I know that most of these schools will want a mid year report, so what are the chances I get rescinded by collleges such as Purdue or UW Madison?

Ask your guidance counselor. That person knows where students with your profile have been admitted in recent years.

You also should be discussing your math-learning issues with your counselor, your math teacher, and possibly with the special education team at your school. What is it about math that has proven so challenging for you the first time each time? What did you to the second time that meant you got those better grades? Could you be using some of those second-try techniques now on your first time through calculus? And last, but not least, why did you/your advisory team enroll you in calculus knowing that math has been so difficult for you? Were there no other options available?

Hi there,
Thank you for the response. I’m currently retaking the first semester of precalc right now as well as taking calculus for the first time. Also, all my classes are AP’s other than precalc which is honors. Will colleges see this as potentially ok since I’ve always trended this way and because my workload is really high? My counselor thought that I should take calc BC instead of AB because I’m going into computer science and that my colleges would want to see me challenge myself.

Also, thank you for the recommendation of talking to my teachers/counselor. I’m not really sure why I never thought about that, but I hope it helps!

Colleges will expect you to do well the first time you take a class, so use this time to figure out what you are doing wrong. In college you don’t want to have to pay to take the same class twice.
