Some info about Oberlin, please?

My D. is very excited to have been accepted to Oberlin, which is such a great school and very well respected, academically. She will be visiting next week, but still has some questions:

What is the social life/ atmosphere like there?

And how do students tend to group themselves? Do different groups interact?

I realize that Oberlin is very liberal, but is the student body diverse in other ways? I assume that not everyone is a "hippie," correct?

Besides campus lectures and student music performances, what is there to do on campus? And, do students find anything to do off campus, in Oberlin? (coffee houses, restaurants? I know the town is very small)

How much work is required, and is the course work generally extremely difficult?

Is there time for "fun," and what do students do for fun? What's a typical week like?

Thanks

You can find many of these questions asked and answered at http://www.livejournal.com/community/obie_questions/, and your D could introduce herself to other newly accepted students at http://www.livejournal.com/community/09erlin/. Hope that helps. Oberlin is a wonderful school!

my son is going to oberlin and is not a hippie at all; he's thoughtful about politics, definitely not an ideologue and open to all different views. he picked the school because he liked the music scene, is eager to get away from his comfort zone in the northeast, and was very impressed by how intellectually engaged students there seemed to be when he visited classes.

i know oberlin has a reputation of being "out there," and there's probably a grain of truth to that. But I know a lot of very different kinds of people who've gone there -- and who go there -- and they all seem very happy with the school.

I'd really like to know more about hte social life
