Well modest, 10 schools later and anxiously D is awaiting decision. She still says by far the best tour! and you represented the student body and all the exciting opportunities at Brown. They are lucky to have you.

4giggs-- you were the mother and daughter towards the end of the summer that went on a science tour but missed the general campus tour so I gave a general tour as well? Or maybe it was vice versa-- I gave the general tour and through in a science tour for you?

Either way, I'm humbled and happy to hear that my tour had a lasting impression. Good luck to you and your D during this stressful and exciting part of the year, I'm sure all will go well.

Gabba-- yes, I was one of you folks too, at some point way back.

umbo-- My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.

yes that was us!

See folks-- come to Brown on Fridays and take my tours and I'll remember you.

Pro-tip -- I've been invited to sit on a panel during ADOCH this year entitled: Advising and the Open Curriculum. on April 22, from 10-10:50 a.m. Come hang out with me then, too.

Brown should be pretty happy... Looks like their 2010 rank is gonna shoot up by quite a bit! Hopefully above Cornell~ (Yes I am biased <3)

Just to maintain reality in this thread...Brown is far from perfect. I hear many praises and many complaints from a variety of people, along with having my own list of positives and negatives.

I'm definitely one of those who have many complaints.. but that's a separate issue.

In fact, I spend a few hour every week dealing with people trying to fix those complaints.

My daughter is a senior who has been incredibly happy at Brown. She has now been accepted at some large, well known public universities for a PhD, and is having a bit of culture shock, however.

Her words from an interview: The most remarkable experiences that have come her way in the past three years involve talks she attended on campus her freshman year. “I got to see Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton in the same school year - before they started running for president - as well as many other great speakers,” she recalls. “It was remarkable because listening to them provided a whole education outside of class, and I don’t think I’ll ever have so many similar opportunities within such a short time frame again.

The value and culture of collaboration and the initmate environment with your profs and grad students especially as an upper class student.

I think the open cirriculum is misunderstood and undervalued. This was a wonderful resource for her to find her major.

Graduation week dance. She always goes.

Getting invited to New Year's eve in Italy, cause the trains to Berlin were on strike and your boyfriend's roommate's friend emailed you.

I can't remark on too many of the small things, except she loves Antonio's too. I hope she is not going there drunk, and your drunk experiences are not a recco for firstyears and their parents, are they?

And spring week concerts.

I am happy when I visit Brown. I love Blue State Coffee (but not the name), and the entire relaxed atmosphere on College Hill. It is ideal for college, imho.

grrr short edit time...

Sci Li-- loves it, loves the white boards

Bike rides to Newport. Trying to do it in 3-1/2 hours, not 5. Taking the ferry home, or, better riding home.

The support they provide to disabled students is outstanding. Our daughter became sick the summer before her freshman year and never recovered. She has been attending part-time for medical reasons, and she has received a lot of help from both the administration and the professors. And they do it the Brown way: along the line, they recruited her to be a mentor in a group for children with long-term illnesses;-)

I hope few of you will have to deal with this, but if you have a disability, take heart, Brown will not let you down and you will be able to study and discover as much as your peers, albeit at a slower pace if you need to.

Sitting in a collaborative study room in the SciLi and covering the translucent marker-board-wall with the mitsonobu reaction... and then looking at it from the outside.

Stealing a take out dessert from the Ratty, and having the card swiper smile and say "Don't worry.. I won't tell them about the cake."

Having students give a standing ovation both for Howard Dean, and for Mike Huckabee

Antonios at 2 am, eating pizza as they close up the store.

Standing in any tall building on campus and looking down on providence all lit up at night.

Walking back up college hill in the snow.

Sprinting down thayer street at 8:55 am in my pajamas realizing i about to be late for orgo-- and not getting weird looks

Wow.. CC generations are being created already....

Haha, just had to comment that that's vaguely creepy...back on topic, I wouldn't have had quite the same experience lurking the Brown boards if it weren't for modestmelody. :]

To ModestMelody, it was your posts that finally helped me switch from Yale SCEA to Brown ED. And I'm never looking back!!!!

I'm flattered, Rachael and Holly.

Since I'll be around (albeit in the grad school), I'll have to check out Holly's Brown sweatshirt under her clothes (yes, I searched for threads we both posted in only because I was wondering what I could have written that was so influential... didn't find anything interesting other than your promise to re-enact the DMouth video if you got in by wearing Brown attire under everything, superman style).

OK, here's my wonderful thing about Brown:
SUPER-CUTE CLOTHES FROM THE BROWN BOOKSTORE!

And here's how that connects:
There's this new shirt with a large B on it that's very adorable that shall be my Super-Brunonian garment.

Also, ModestMelody, it was the combination of your consistent informativeness, and your interest in the development and improvement of Brown that really impressed me. I mean, at how many colleges can students step up and deal with issues of recruitment and academic policies (and be taken seriously)?

OH! Another nice Brown likable:
Today, I (with the sticker from the admit packet on my car) drove by a Saab with a very large Brown seal on its window on one side of my car. On the other side of my car was a car with (a really bad driver and) a Brown license plate frame. It was definitely unusual but I liked the feeling.

Brown is definitely unique in giving students a ton of power if they choose to take it and in taking the student body almost as seriously as the faculty when it comes to making decisions.

I hope you love Brown and it's all I've said it was-- more than that, I hope that where it does not live up to its reputation that you choose to make it that way. Honestly, that's the best thing any student can do for Brown and it's what keeps Brown a magnificent place.

Oh, modestmelody, do you know anything about the Urban Studies department? I remember now, that was the first legitimate thing that got me into Brown, the fact that it is one of the few schools in the nation that have an actual Urban Studies major, instead of just like Sociology with a concentration in Urban development or anything.

Other than the fact that one of my favorite profs is half appointed there and we consistently internally talk about Urban Studies as an example of interdisciplinary concentration done right (supported well, good advising, etc), I don't know much.

So basically-- we seem to think that Urban Studies at Brown is a demonstration of ideal interdisciplinary concentrations. Sounds like a pretty good place to be to me.

modest, I was one of those 100+ at the Bruin Club meeting. :)

I love Gail. For those of you who don't know her, she's a card swiper in the Ratty, and the day she remembered my name without looking at my card was one of the most memorable of my life. Honestly.

I love/hate Brown for getting me so into GXC. For those of you who don't know, there's an annual Ivy League game on GoCrossCampus dot com, and being a commander for that team was really fun (even though I didn't put in as much work as some of the other commanders did).

I like people watching, and watching Brown people is really satisfying. As creepy as that sounds. Most are all really happy, and a smile is very contagious.

I like sitting around a crowded lunch table only to have someone call someone else a M*dblood and have the whole table stop everything and gasp.

Uh... Sungchul... I was a Commander for that as well... did you know that?
