Some questions about KP and its admissions...

Hey everybody, I am going to be a senior next year and USMMA is at the top of my list of colleges I want to attend. I was hoping some of you may know the answers to these questions:

1) I recieved an admissions application in the mail a while back with a timeline that states the CFE is not used in the decision process. Is the CFE really not used in the admission decision?

2) If I'm being recruited by one of KPs sports teams how much will that help me get me admitted?

3) I know the decision process is not so black and white, but maybe you could assess my chances.

-Varsity Football, Varsity Wrestling, Varsity Lacrosse
-Wrestling captain
-Placed in two varsity wrestling tournaments this past season.
-3.4 GPA (Honors and AP level classes)
-1770 SAT. 650 on CR. 610 on M. 510 on W.
-Community Service (Helping out with younger special needs children at a summer program)
-Part of the MENTOR program at HS

Any insight would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I would say your have a great chance!

You won’t be seleted based on your CFE but you have to pass it before you get fully admitted. Otherwise, you have and excellent chance but need a nomination from your state representative or one your senators. Contact their offices and request an application package. Start early and good luck.

There is probably a link on your Congressman’s/Senator’s website. Start there and good luck.

Thanks TX2KP, doktrmom, and KPMarineopsdad. I have already called my representative and I am currently working on the application the office mailed me. I can’t wait to visit KP next month. I appreciate the help, thanks.

one piece of advice when dealing with your congressmen and the school for application stuff…
make copies of EVERYTHING and send everything with signature confirmation. leave nothing to the chance of it getting lost in the mail. that will make the process a lot easier on you. all in all, you might spend $50 on postage to do it that way, but i’d say it’s worth it. it definitely helped me.

is2day4him I’ll definetly do that. Nothing would look worse than calling my representatives office and asking for another application.

Don’t forget about the DODMERB exam try to get it done as early as possible in case a waiver is needed. Larry Mullen is great if there are any problems. Get the essays out early and be sure to stay on top of HS guidance (since for academy’s there is alot more for them to do) Good Luck. Keep posting questions, these board.s are great

MG2013Mom I got my DODMERB in a few days. I almost forgot about it, thanks for the reminder…

Strongly suggest that you apply to both of your senators in addition to your congressman for nominations. I knew of one case where the applicant was only going to apply to the congressman because the family knew him. I pressured her to also apply to both her senators. She received her nomination from her senator, not the congressman friend of the family. Most legislators have separate committees to review and recommend applicants.

Absolutly do every application for a nomination, you never know who will be on the panels and make a connection with. hope DODMERB goes well

I had my DODMERB today and I do have a few questions.
-I think everything went well but when will I find out if I’m medically qualified?
-One of my eyes is weaker than the other, but I have never worn glasses. The eye doctor recommended glasses, but did not say it was a necessity. Will I be notified by the goverment if I will require glasses?
-I don’t think I will need a waiver, but are they difficult to get?
I appreciate all of your help guys.

If I recall properly, S had login to dodmerb site…
You could track processing status through that site.
Once completed there, info is (electronically?) sent to notify Academies you selected. Different academies have different Dodmerb requirements.
What may pass, or be waiverable at one… might be a disqualifying condition at another.

Just monitor. If it gets ‘stuck’ somewhere (wanting more information, etc), be sure to hop on that right away.

The Dodmerb folks were really professional, quick, and helpful through our experience. Luckily, no serious bumps.
Good luck.

Larry Mullen at DODMERB is the go to person. I am one of his biggest fans. Larry will get back to you via e-mail within 1 or 2 days. He is the best!!

Future…you need to log into DodMerb website to see the status. If you have questions call dodmerb and they will tell you how to log in and look for your results. If you need any waivers and/or if they require additional information, you will see it there.

FutureKP:

Echoing everything you’ve heard here and amplifying a few things.

1) Apply to everyone you can to get a nomination - that will include your Congressman and both US Senators from your state.
2) Definately go on the overnight visit but I will also tell you from the sound of it you are going this coming month. That’s good and bad - good in that except for Indoc, you will see life as a Plebe Candidate - when it’s all the toughest for the member of the Class of 2013 you’ll be staying with. Don’t get discouraged and also don’t believe them if they say they think the academics aren’t hard - things get harder from about week 5 of a trimester on and the members of the Class of 2013 won’t have lived through that yet.
3) If possible I always recommend you do the visit through the sports team you’re interested in, this way you are paired with folks who you’ll be on the team with; if you get in and decide to go, your support network will consist most of friends you make on that team and Classmates with the same major and “split” as you’ll be in, so a visit this way will get you the best exposure to those folks.

In answer to your direct questions:

 • The CFE question was already answered so I won’t repeat.
 • RE; Being recruited, if you are while you are visiting the coach will tell you what he can and CAN’T do to help you. Obviously, it doesn’t hurt and your other stuff including your test scores are in line with recent averages, etc. The rest of what you list seems stellar so I think your chances are very good.
 • The process has a lot of paperwork and numerous deadlines, my best advice is make sure you understand and meet all of them. The earlier your package is complete and waiting for what should be the last item - your nmination, the better the chance you’ll hear of your reciept of an appointment when the first group are given out.

Good luck and as I’m a 1982 grad with a son in Class of 2012 who has been an admissions field rep for over 15 years feel free to contact me if you want further advice though I’d suggest you talk to admissions during your visit and they can get you in contact with an Admissions Field Rep in your area who can also help you and your folks understand the process as you go through it.

Thanks everybody for your advice.
