I understand that people who need the Pell Grant get it until they complete their first bachelor's. How many hours of financial aid are given for them to complete it? I know there is a limit somewhere.

Also, do total hours count towards this limit or only hours that the Pell Grant was applied?

The Pell actually has some bizarre limit like 18 semesters.

However schools also have limits that they apply. Schools should had publicly available their SAP (Satisfactory Academic Progress) requirements. These may include things like satisfactory grades, and the total number of attempted hours allowed to be eligible for financial aid. For instance at my daughter’s school the credit hour limit is 150% of the credit hours for the degree. So if the degree required 120 hours and someone went over 180 they would not be eligible for aid (or would have to go through an appeals process if there was some reason they were exceeding the hours). This limit includes all attempted hours at any school including any hours attempted and dropped or failed. And it does not matter whether you were receiving aid for all the hours. So even at minimum full time of 12 hour a semester it would be a stretch to remain eligible for 18 semesters. The SAP rules will vary by school, but they all have some.
