This year I got rejected from Yale - the only US university I applied to for a number of complicated reasons. I got over it fine, figured that I'd be happy at my UK university instead (top 10). I've been here for a bit over a week now, got involved in a multitude of things, but the problem is that I HATE the academic side of things here. I can't take the classes I wanted to take (despite being previously told that I'd be able to if I came to this university), an additional program of study (which was the reason I chose this school) isn't available either, and on top of that my classmates don't seem to be very serious about school (I mean, really? Falling asleep in your first tutorial?!)

For these reasons, and a few more that I won't go into now, I thought that the US might be the right port of call now. I've read all about the statistics for Ivy League schools, and I'm well aware of how difficult, if not impossible, it is to get in. I'm not just set on Yale/Harvard, I'd also like to try places like Dartmouth or Amherst and despite the odds, I want to give it a go for the peace of my own mind.

Does anybody have any advice about how to go about building my application? And most importantly, would the reasons I have given here be enough for an American college to take me? There are some major financial issues that underly my decision to not apply to America before, so would that mean anything at all to them? Also, do you know any other schools that provide financial aid to internationals?

Any advice would be much appreciated.
