I guess this is a variation of the "chances" sort of post. I'm a second year at a fairly reputable top 40 liberal arts college. I'm quite unhappy, and the Department of my major is quite weak - two good reasons, in my opinion, to transfer. That said, I would hate to uproot myself unless it is for a school that meets my academic needs and is of considerable repute. Given my stat sheet below, do I have a chance (is it even worth the effort to apply?) at Columbia, Yale, or Brown?

College GPA: 3.9+, after three semesters
Major: Economics
HS GPA: 2.9/3.0 unweighted; 3.4 weighted (maybe 9-10 APs)
Extracurriculars: I have few, but highly concentrated extracurricular activities, which includes some pretty intense social work, both domestic and overseas. I've also interned with local businesses, and worked during term time.
SATs: 1350 ; 710W, 780 USHist, 690M

Any help/guidance would be very much appreciated. Thanks much

You can't always defer your acceptances to most schools if coming in as a transfer. Nonetheless, I'd apply if I were you... You've really got nothing to lose by putting together an app process except for some money and time. If you think you got chances, which looks like you got great GPA to back you up, then by all means, do it.

Everyone that applies to these schools has great GPA's, but I was thinking that my high school academic record might be a serious deterrent.

Do I have a realistic chance of getting into any of these places (realistic meaning as reasonable of a chance as anyone else applying)? If not, I'd rather save the money, time, and peace of mind and just stick out my final two years. I'd really appreciate anyone's input...I tend to bounce ideas like this in my head so much so that I just get lost in the thoughts.

if you are applying as a junior you hs gpa wont matter that much. Write a good essay explaining why you want to go to the school you are applying for and you will defiently have a shot. Go for it, the worst that can happen is they'll reject you which is still better than wondering if you would have gotten in. Maybe pick one other school to apply to that isn't quite as hard but you'd also be happy at. That way you have a 'safety' that is good in your major and you have a place to go if you want to leave your current school.

you should also get moving as deadlines for these schools is 3/1 and you will need to request transcripts/recs and write essays. i'm not sure you have enough time with only 1 week left until deadline.
