-how good do you think UB is with grad school placement.. or does anyone know how many people go to grad school and if some people go to top grad schools in the county?

-how hard is it to get to niagara falls and toronto? do a lot of student go for the night/take day trips (and how if they dont have a car)

-do you know if the architecture and planning school is well known/has a good reputation?

-how many teachers are from other countries/do you have a hard time understanding some?

-is it pretty easy to get a minor in something?

-is it easy to study abroad

thanks in advance :)

Another question -- Does the library have a coffee shop in it? Is it open all night?

I don't go here but do Live here so I'll try to answer some.

-do you think it would be hard for someone from out of state to fit in/do a lot
of people from the new york metro and western ny already know each other?

I don't think it will be difficult to fit in. Westrn NY and New York Metro are pretty big places, going into freshman year very few people will actually know more than one or two people around them, even the locals.

-how good do you think UB is with grad school placement.. or does anyone know how many people go to grad school and if some people go to top grad schools in the county?

From what I understand UB is pretty good with grad school placement, I could't give you a number of people in top grad schools but I do know that UB is one of, if not the most known SUNY for many subjects, and it is known to be a good school.

-how hard is it to get to niagara falls and toronto? do a lot of student go for the night/take day trips (and how if they dont have a car)

Niagara Falls, Canada is like 20 minutes away from UB. Toronto is maybe a 2hour drive. Tons of people hit Canada with their friends at night because the drinking age is 19 there.

-how many teachers are from other countries/do you have a hard time understanding some?

I have heard some complaints from my friends who go here that they have a few professors from India or whatever that they simply can't understand. You'll get that at any university, though.

Hope it helps.

-do you think it would be hard for someone from out of state to fit in/do a lot of people from the new york metro and western ny already know each other? no, no

-how good do you think UB is with grad school placement.. or does anyone know how many people go to grad school and if some people go to top grad schools in the county? dont know

-how hard is it to get to niagara falls and toronto? do a lot of student go for the night/take day trips (and how if they dont have a car) niagara falls is about half an hour away, torontos about an hour, find a friend with a car

-do you know if the architecture and planning school is well known/has a good reputation? pretty reputable, very good for a state school

-how many teachers are from other countries/do you have a hard time understanding some? not really, u can always look at ratemyprofessor.com before choosing a professor

-is it pretty easy to get a minor in something? yea, but not if your major is architecture

-is it easy to study abroad, yea

one of the libraries is open 24 hours, no coffee shop, but there is a starbucks and coffee vending machines

While I live in eastern upstate NY, I can easily tell you people around here aren't buddies with western Nyers or metro ones since it's just as spacious up here as anywhere. Most likely, unless you met them online or their family/family friends, locals will be just as friendless at Buffalo as someone from New Mexico.

There are several libraries at UB. The two major ones, Lockwood Memorial and Silverman Undergraduate(UGL), do not have any coffee shops within their boundaries per se. However, in the same building as UGL, there is a small cafe that sells coffee, and snack items such as doughnuts, bagels, cookies, etc. during the day, but it is not open all night like UGL is.

Thanks -- this is helpful. My kid has finally narrowed it down (hurray) to 4 schools. SUNY is at the top of the list right now, but we need to do a 2nd round of visits. We're down to SUNY (honors college, $14K cost out-of-state after scholarships, prepharm), PSU (bio major, sibling at same school, $20K cost), Pitt (neuroscience major, $20K cost) or Ohio U (bio major, neuroscience minor, $15K cost after scholarships). OSU, UConn, Duquesne Honors and Toledo were rejected for various reasons. My kid isn't sure about which major to pursue yet (the ultimate goal is med school). I'll be nervous until that deposit is mailed!!!!!

I saw your post on Pitt's site and you mentioned that your kid was guaranteed Pharmacy at SUNY Buffalo. Did you receive something specific stating the guarantee or is this pre-pharm and the guarantee of admission if you meet the qualifications in the 1st 2 years?

As I understand the web site for prepharm, it's a guarantee as long as you declare a prepharm major when applying, and then earn the GPA in the required classes (the GPA is the same to stay in the honors program). The admissions letter confirmed prepharm.

My older kid tried it, but was defeated by freshman chem. It was an effective "weed out" class. I've read on other sites that chem is a weed out class for science majors at other schools too.

My older kid said the prepharm advisers are great, and met a lot of other prepharm students at the summer registration (the registrations were by majors, which made it easy to meet others before the first day of classes). Of the friends that he made at registration, by the way, only one actually is going into Yr 3 pharm program. Most of the prepharm kids either couldn't get the required GPA for the automatic admission (although they can still apply the regular way) or they switched majors. My point is that the school isn't overloaded with pharm students even though it has a lot of prepharm students since it's not easy to get the 3.5 GPA. If my kid decides on SUNY, I'm insisting on a back-up major!

This process is making me nuts. I want my kid to make a decision! Every day I come home from work, my kid is leaning towards a different school...

I hear ya - we are in the same boat! Back and forth on the major and on the top schools - Pitt is also on the top of the list. We are already exploring a backup major just in case. Thanks for the input on what your older kid experienced. I was suspecting something like that might happen but didn't have any first hand knowledge. At least at Buffalo it seems like there is a guarantee unless you defeat yourself - some of the others schools I am not so sure the chances are even that good!
