Yes, Sea Legs but it says that they evaluate the highest compostie score....so why would it affect my decision if they focus on the highest one only? and Korean...what do you mean by don't let them send my transcript out..? I thought i had to do that...

Thanks for comments.

my guess, with no actual knowledge to back it up, is that colleges might figure if you take the same test a ton of times and get better and better at it, then at that point you're not really proving your intelligence and academic ability, but rather just getting better at a particular test. just my guess.

Yeah, jax has it right. Most colleges figure that someone who took the ACT five times would have an advantage over someone who just took it once.

and the ACT sends your score to your school, and most schools (or at least mine does, hah) put all of your scores on your transcript.

But on that link it says that they look at your highest score.

ok, look at this link to Duke.

https://www.admissions.duke.edu/jump/applying/apply_testing.html

you can send your best one here right?

"All candidates for admission must complete either the College Board Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) or the test of the American College Program (ACT) and arrange to have official test scores sent to Duke."

yeah. Some high school puts all the tests on there(AP/SAT II/SAT/ACT). I wish I had found out before I took SAT II and my AP test.lol.

yes, galib, they will look at your highest score for official purposes, you will still "be" the score that you got in the end, but that doesn't mean that they can't look at the number of times you took the test.

and let's keep in mind that these are mostly top schools that care about this kind of stuff. most schools in the nation would be absolutely thrilled to accept a 34, even if the kid took it the test 5+ times.

So say i take the Act 7 times and get a 32... I still have a pretty good chance to get into Duke or say some top colleges?

i have no idea. duke has low OOS admission rates, but a 32 is a great score. again, i dont really have any experience or knowledge in being admitted to prestigious universities, i was only guessing as to what a college's logic would be.

to be on the safe side, i would personally not take it 7 times, and i wouldnt start my sophomore year. i took one cold in december (im a junior), and im taking 2 more in april and will hopefully be done (one of my tests in april is required by my state, so i can't help that).

what i can tell you for a fact is that there are amazing schools out there that will accept your 32 no matter how many times you take it. it's an extremely impressive score, no questions asked. but in the eyes of places like harvard, someone who got a 34 or 35 cold might be a much stronger candidate than someone with a 36 who took the test more than like 5 times. i say "might" because there are obviously a ton more factors that go into the admissions process.

How many times should I take the act before colleges think that you are jet gettign better at the test by taking it many times? I am a sophomore and have taken it three times and 26 is my highest score.

Korean boi how many times have you taken the Act?

twice. I took it in Sept and got a 24 with a prep class during summer.

I got a 26 in Feb with no prepping at all since after the Sept test until Feb. So don't know, wasted money just to get a 24 on my first try. Then got a 26 with no studying.

But yeah, I'm aiming for a 29+ in April

Are you a sophomore korean? and good luck i really do hope i get 30+ 29 atleast is my minimum for texas university....29+ is auto accepted for out of state...so yeah..

but i still want to get into duke also....duke is what im aiming for...anyways good luck :D

I would recommend waiting to take the ACT again until you are a junior, and I would say probably waiting until at least Jan of your Junior yr to take it. You will have a whole other year to gain common knowledge through your high school, and will probably have a better chance at getting a better score. A lot of colleges would prefer to look at someones score of their junior yr, as well. Taking it so many times as a sophmore can be useless, since it would be more beneficial to take it as a junior. Plus you'll save money that way!!! So to sum it up, just wait until next year!:)

Galib2011.............Take a look at the Georgetown website (Georgetown.edu) and follow the admissions links. The explanation about how test scores are utilized is explained nicely and is similar to some other schools' policies as well. I understand your frustration and am glad you are soliciting input on this forum. Some schools will allow you to do score choice for both ACT and SAT, you just have to find out which ones.

Good luck!

Ok cool, I waS just wondering. I hope I have some potential LOL. I don't want to be stuck below a 30 :/

same here. Parents are also pushing me to get over a 30.

Some reading section tips and strategies are will be greatly appreciated :D ( or for any section ). Thanks to all of you who have posted on here and good luck to you all.
