Somewhat of a dilemma...

So, here's my situation:
I got into UCD, but I'm thinking UCB is better for my particular major, so I'm left with two options. Go to UCD and try to transfer in two years, or go to community college now and then try to transfer, but there's no guarantee into UCB in either case.

Do you guys think its best to go to UCD for 2yrs then UCB, or CC for 2yrs then UCB? Does not transferring from CC really hurt your chances?

Thanks very much!
Dmission

Go to a CCC for 2 yrs, apply to UCB, AND complete UCD's (or UCSD, UCI, UCSB, UCSC) TAG so you have a reserved spot in case of a Cal rejection

Thanks for the reply, alansda.

How much more difficult is it to transfer to UCB from UCD than from a CC? Since there's no guarantee for UCB, why not just start at UCD?

Dmission

I think it depends on what your priorities are. If money isn't an issue, and you want to have the experience of living on campus as a freshman/sophmore, I would go to UCD. I think if you do well at UCD and finish all of UCB's pre-reqs, you'll have nearly the same chance as getting in to UCB as someone from a CC. If you search these boards long enough you'll find quite a bit of transfers from other UCs.

There's no meterstick by which to tell you the level of difficulty, as it varies with every major and with the overall applicant pool of each year.
Take a look at UCLA as an example:

You can try fiddling with the data for Cal here: <a href="https://osr2.berkeley.edu/menu_control/Topics/student_data/institutional_data.phtml%5B/url%5D">https://osr2.berkeley.edu/menu_control/Topics/student_data/institutional_data.phtml</a></p>

Thanks both of you for the replies!
I like to think that money isn't an issue, anything for education, right? :D

alansda: Thank you for those charts. It seems that UCD admits to UCLA actually have a better chance (46%) than the rest of CCC transfers(41%).

That was my main concern, as to how much transferring from another UC hurts you, but it seems it might even help you. However, I was unable to find data like that from Cal, but I'll keep looking. Thanks!

whats your major OP?

My major is Computer Science in the College of Letters and Science. (B.S. at Davis, B.A. at Cal)

The way I see it is that if you spend two years at a CC and then end up actually getting rejected to UCB (which hopefully won't happen, of course) and you do get back into UCD because of TAG, you'll be like, "great, why didn't I just spend these last two years at UCD then?" I think you'll still have a good chance of transferring from UCD, and those statistic show so.

Yes, intercampus transferring is more difficult than CCC to UC transferring. In terms of Davis to Berkeley, you would have to ask one of the transfer admissions reps.

Keep in mind that the level of difficulty of classes is going to be much greater than that of a community college. Getting a 3.5 in a CC might be a piece of cake, but it might not be as easy at UCD (making it much harder to transfer with a high GPA). If I were you, I would go to UCD, study your ass off, and then try transferring in two years. Even if you get rejected, you will still be at a good school to begin with. :)

Thanks, joehanus, Woman.Of.Troy, and KitKat42008.
joehanus: That's what I was thinking too, even more so now that the UCD % seems to be higher.

Woman.Of.Troy: Thanks for the reply. Do you mean an admission rep. from UCB? Do they have an email where they answer questions like that?

KitKat42008: Thanks for the reply. That's what I thought too, but I talked to some CC people and they said you shouldn't assume it's easy to get a high GPA there. Any word on the avg. GPA at UCD, or how hard it is to do well?

Thanks!
Dmission

Just one last thing, has anyone been able to find those statistics for Transfer admits to UCB based on previous UC campus (such as the data above in the UCLA tables)?

Thanks,
dmission

Well ok, the classes at CC's aren't ALL easy, but my main point is that you have a better chance of getting a higher GPA at a CC than at a UC (in most cases). :)

True, very true... hmmm

dmission- Sorry for taking so long to answer. Yes one straight from Berkeley.

btw, WOT, how is your application at usc ? your decent grades deserve the acceptance. good luck !

sheep99- Thank you so much! :) I need words of encouragement here and there. Apparently, Annenberg School for Communication will notify their applicants the week of June 1st. & thats pretty much it, lol. I have to wait like 2 and half more weeks. Hoping for the best! :)

Yes, good luck!
