Son has an weird tax situation...Ask about it here or can I PM someone?

Any tax experts that can help us out with an issue related to 1099 MISC, prior year taxes and 2010 return? We are stalled in the process, which is holding up finishing FAFSA, and we need some information/help.

I can post here if appropriate, or PM someone details, or post on Parent forum maybe?
Thanks!

There is one parent who goes by “taxguy” you could try sending him a PM.

If you realize that you’ve messed up in past years, you can file 1040x for those years. I’ve done that a couple of times and it really is not a big deal. If the feds owe you money, they will send it to you. If you owe them money, there will be a penalty charge. If things are really ugly, make an appointment with the local IRS office, and have them fix everything for you.

Good luck!

Thanks happymom.

Long story short for this purpose: I don’t think we messed up. I think the IRS messed up. They sent son a refund check for the entire amount of the self employment tax he paid last year with a note that there was an error on Schedule C. Since he had no business expenses, there really was no possibility of an error…his full income is reported there and the exact number is on his 1040. IRS insists they are right but that he should still report his 1099MISC income in the same way this year.

We of course want to figure out if they are right, where we went wrong, so he can hopefully avoid those taxes this year.

See, it’s weird…

I would take happymom’s advice and make an appointment at your nearest IRS field office…or refer the matter to your tax professional, if you have one!

Yup, that one is odd! You need an expert.

For now, stash that “refund” in a safe place in case he needs to pay it after all!
