1099; He does not have a 1040.

***I know this is all late. He is my noncustodial parent, and he lives far away. It is really complicated, and I do not feel like telling the whole story. I just need advice and possible clarification.

IDOC stuff: My father sent me his entire digital tax return file, and there is no 1040 in that file. There was only a 1099 in it along with a bunch of other stuff. There was also an 8879 form. Does everyone have a 1040 no matter what? There was a form where he and his wife were both on the same sheet. There are 42 pages of information.

He drives trucks, and I remember him saying something about being technically self-employed. He did not even file taxes last year until October.

I know this all sounds crazy, and I don’t even understand it myself. It is very complicated. Can someone give me some insight please?

Did he file his 2015 taxes yet? If he didn’t do 2014 until last october, there is a good chance he hasn’t filed his 2015 taxes yet…and has just sent you the info he plans to use…when he does.

You need to ask him.

The 1099 is not a tax return.

The 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ are tax returns.

Sounds like he attached all of the schedules but not the 1040, probably by mistake. Is there a Schedule A, Schedule C, etc.? Form 8879 is the form for electronic signature of a tax return.

Filing in October means he filed a six month extension which is completely legal, albeit difficult for future FASFAs.

I am 90% sure that he actually did file his taxes already. I even have the receipts from Jackson Hewitt. I am just going to ask him to look for the 1040/1040A in his files on the Jackson Hewitt website again. I am hoping that it is there because this entire situation has been one of the most emotionally draining ordeals in which I have ever been involved.

My school is Stanford. They have already sent me a revised copy of my financial aid with my mother’s income factored in. I still need to send the noncustodial parent (him). However, on my AXESS, the IDOC disappeared from my “to-do” list before I had ever uploaded my noncustodial parents’ information. What does this mean? Do they not care about that information anymore? I really hope so. I am going to call the Stanford financial aid office tomorrow (before I get on the plane to head to admit weekend).

Do you think they will let me verify my father’s income in another way if this current situation falls through? I just do not want to lose all of my financial aid because I am going to be in a crapload of debt if I don’t get the aid.

Actually, filing 2015 taxes in October would be a problem for THIS year FAFSA.

In future years, prior prior tax year will be used and the FAFSA will be available in October, which will actually mean that the self employed will have taxes done!

For example…when doing the 2017-2018 FAFSA for the next school year…it will become available in October 2016, and will use 2015 tax return info which will be nice and freshly done by that self employed parent.

For the 2018-2019 FAFSA, the 2016 taxes will be used. That one will become available in October 2017…and again the 2016 taxes should be just completed by that self employed parent.

I think I have those dates right!!

But that doesn’t help this year!! 2015 taxes need to get done.

You can only borrow $5500 for freshman year which is not “a crapload”.
