My son is going into his senior and applying early action to these colleges:stanford northwestern and university of chicago. He has a 4.72 GPA and has gotten all A’s and A-'s except one B+ one semester of his sophomore year. 800 SAT 2 math and 790 sat 2 chem. 35 ACT. 2250 SAT. He has taken 8 APs so far and will be taking more as a senior. He has gotten all 5’s on his exams(calc bc, us, physics, etc) except one 4 on european history. I would say he is a slightly weaker in the extra curricular activities. He participated in fencing, soccer, key club(volunteer), national honor society, and future business leaders of america. He has also done service outside of school at feed my starving children. What are his chances?
Based on what your described, your son has very good chances at all these schools. Granted admission odds are low for all these schools, so assuming you son applied to all of them odds are he’d get rejected at one of them, but with those grades he is easily in the top 15-20% of applicants. AP scores don’t really matter for admissions but having all 5s is like submitting subject tests and can be good to brag to a college. His ECs seem fine as long as he’s committed to them. I would suggest applying ED/EA to a top choice to boost his odds (assuming after research has been done and it’s financially ok). I’d say highest odds are NU (particularly for ED) with similar odds for UChicago and maybe slightly lower odds for Stanford.
The grades and scores are definitely there, but the EC’s are going to hurt his chances greatly. If there’s any way for him to assume a leadership role in any of those, it would greatly help his chances. I would say Stanford is a high reach, UC is a medium reach, and NU is a match-low reach. Hope I helped.
