soo where you wanna live bro?

I'm going to be a frosh at obie next year and I just wanted to know form people who know best (which could be anyone thanks to information techonlogy) what are the advantages/ disadvantages of living in a Co-Op freshmen year? I kinda like the idea, but I feel like it would shut my eyes to other things college has to offer... any suggestions?

i'm not actually a student at oberlin so take this (along with everything you read on cc) with a grain of salt. but i know someone who lived in a co-op, didnt meet the standards of her house, was kicked out, and spent half of last semester sleeping on friends' couches because oberlin couldnt get housing for her until this semester. i dont know how often this happens, i assume it's pretty rare, but just remember that in a co-op there will be certain rules for you to follow that might not apply to you if you lived in a regular dorm.

A disadvantage might be that the community is small, and it can be hard to get a good feel for the co-op before you have to choose. DEFINITELY visit the co-op in person and have a meal there before you join as a frosh. You're going to be living and working very closely with those people.

I've spent some time in Keep and (especially) Asia House at Oberlin. Both had a lot to offer IMHO.

since the detailed info on housing, dining..etc hasnt arrived yet, ive been doing some research on my own...but still cant find any line mentioning summer housing (been searching like crazy, yet...T_T) if anyone can, plz help: what if i want to stay for a summer job? are the dorms available? are there any extra charges?

well like firstly what does IMHO mean hahaa sry not too good with the lexicon of the new age......
and thanks for ur advice i didnt even think of that, and i just got back from ohio like 2 days ago! i wish i would have read that earlier, oh well must go back then...
im considering living in keep or the third world house (im a first generation american and a minority, my parents are from Tblisi, Georgia) but yea those would be fun choices for me but i jsut dont wannt to miss out, but thanks so much

r u planning ono staying this summer of summer after ur frosh year? I'm pretty sure they offer something like that, and the housing is discounted. just call the offices and see what they say.

IMHO = In My Humble Opinion

Regarding summer housing, you may also wish to check out the classified ads on the Oberlin web site for a summer sublet. There are a couple of such ads there already, but around April or so they become a lot more common and the prices start going down.

im planning to stay this summer and maybe another summer in 3rd year. :)
thanks guy, ill go have a look ^^

The Department of Residential Education (the housing and dining department) and Conference Services offers some Conference Assistant positions over the summer that include housing. Check out this page for more info:

Otherwise, I don't think that summer housing is available through the college. But you'd have to check with ResEd to be sure.
