SOOOO Many abbreviations

Whats up with having all these abbreviations:

I've seen HYPS, CHYMPS, SHYP, etc... why can't you just say Ivy league schools.

I've seen parents say D or S... is it really that hard to add to more letters and say Son???

I'm not saying it's bad but for new users who come looking for advice.. they'll get confused by this

P.S.
Does anyone want to just put a list of common abbreviations here?

I'll start off with the ones of my head:
CHYMPS = Caltech, Harvard, Yale, MIT, Princeton, Stanford
HYPS = (look above)
S= son
D= daughter
ED= Early Decision - binding
EC's = extra curriculars
UC's = the different University of California's
EA = Early Action - nonbinding
URM = under represented minority
ORM = over represented minority
CC = this site or community college
OP = original poster
EECS = electrical engineering and computer science

Thanks for any suggestions/corrections

btw I know there's a thread for this in the Parents Cafe but this is much easier to have in ONE post

CHYMPS is actually

Caltech, Harvard, Yale, MIT, Princeton, Stanford (the top 5 schools)

the C does not stand for Cornell hehe

EA is early action (or i think sometimes called early alternative?) it's non-binding early admission, as opposed to ED which is binding

EECS - electrical engineering and computer science

Don't forget SCEA. Thats an abbreviation I see alot.

Or SAT and ACT (just kidding about the last two.)

sorry go to this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=353004

CHYMPS usually means Caltech, but HYPSMC generally means Columbia. Or the person writing it is just confused.

Oh and don't forget that little thing that was popular for a few days:
PHYSICs

Princetone, Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Institutes of Tech (MIT, Caltech), Columbia
