Soph female arrested at Logan w/ fake bomb

Ouch. Circuit board, wiring and play dough. Black hooded sweatshirt. She claimed it was art and wanted to stand out on career day. H E L L O?

I know her. My zephyr class is buzzing with this story. Several people saw her wearing the thing at the Career Fair - they said it was green LEDs arranged in the shape of a star (a pun on her name).

Wearing electronics absentmindedly is totally the sort of thing she'd do, but gah, common sense...!

She must be some kind of nutty or having a break from reality. You just have to wonder. Her website is something.

See this link--scary!

<a href="http://www.boston.com/news/globe/city_region/breaking_news/2007/09/mit_student_arr.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.boston.com/news/globe/city_region/breaking_news/2007/09/mit_student_arr.html</a></p>

I think she showed a severe lack of common sense for the fact that she wore homemade electronics in an airport at all, but I can see not making the leap that a green LED star pattern on a 4" x 2" PCB would frighten people. She's an absent-minded-professor type, but not a nutjob.

Let me see.....this happened at 8AM and she is from Hawaii so her folks were likely fast asleep.....now they are trying to hire a lawyer....FAST. Can you say double the cost of Second year?

So much for their Shining Star

The Boston Herald has a pic of the "device" up.

<a href="http://multimedia.heraldinteractive.com/images/cfa4827569_20070921device3.jpg%5B/url%5D">http://multimedia.heraldinteractive.com/images/cfa4827569_20070921device3.jpg</a></p>

After the hubbub over the Comedy Central lite-brites earlier this year, everyone should know that Boston law enforcement authorities in particular have a (you should pardon the expression) hair-trigger about electronic devices, and it should be clear to all that there is no space for testing anyone's patience at airports anymore. It's a sad but realistic truth that this sort of thing just has to be self-censored these days.

I feel sorry for Star, but I wonder where her head was at. And what the point of the PlayDoh was... that alone might have been a provocative step over a wiggly line.

Bail of $750....back to court in Oct.

Is lacking common sense common at MIT?

what an idiot...who the hell wears something like that in a public place?

The media, as usual for these types of events related to MIT, is WAY over-sensationalizing it. It was all innocent, so there isn't any reason to start a grand discussion about the common sense of MIT students (who on average have far more than the average us citizen). I've seen similar reactions of hostility when airport employees see people using linux on their laptops (and thus lots of terminal windows open) and think they must by default hacking the network.

That's why she goes to MIT :)

Star Simpson was probably innocent, but she was severely handicapped in common sense and social judgment. You don’t touch a 1000V line with your bare hand or shout fire in a crowded theater. Why would you WEAR an electronic device that even remotely resembled a lit-up bomb at Logan? Did you know what happened there on 9/11/2001? Star was lucky to be alive, and the judge was extremely lenient IMO for the $750 bail.

Here’s to Star’s school. C’mon MIT. Your students are smart and wise. Still you’ve got to teach them (or reiterate) some common sense so they can better connect with people beyond their small, academic circle.

people like her give me hope of being able to get into MIT

wow....i still cannot get over how stupid she was..

Ever see the Christmas sweatshirts with the lit up Santa and the blinking reindeer usually grandmothers wear them from Georgia! They sell them at K Mart. Well I think this is the 2007 version of artwear for an electrical engineering student. So 'better watch out' all you Grandmas 'you better not' go out to the airport wearing a blinking reindeer nose! As for me I am still measuring my shampoo into tiny hotel bottles so I dont get into trouble on the airport security line. I feel sorry for the student she's probably a great kid. Wish the press would just go back after Britney or Paris.

Hey guys, just as a heads-up, Star has a CC account -- I first met her on CC.

So try not to be too horrible.

She was on CC before we even got into the school.

And honestly, when you read the Tech's article, your realize it's a totally innocuous thing - it was a clever name tag she had on at the career fair. I feel bad for her now.
