Sophie Davis Pgm.

Hi, I am a senior who grew up in NYC, but moved to San Diego in the middle of high school because of family issues. However, because of a remaining address in NYC, I am on a NYC tax return and am eligible for participation in the Sophie Davis program. If anyone, graduates, participants, or other applicants can view my stats it would be greatly appreciated, as would other tips and/or advice.

Also, bear in mind, for hereditary reasons, I will be studying abroad for the 2009-2010 year, so I will be applying for fall of 2010 because SD won't let me defer.

SAT- 1910, 1240 on the CR and Math. (I was sick with the flu when I took the SAT, but i have the chance to retake it because I am applying next year)

-I volunteered for 250+ hours at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center Brooklyn Campus. There I worked in the operating room where I observed countless fascinating surgeries, and I wheeled patients too ICU, etc, to the OR, and from the OR to recovery. I also observed a dermatology clinic. I also worked in EKG and hooked patents up to machines, etc.
-When I moved, I continued volunteering in hospitals, specifically with a cardiovascular surgeon in one of the nation's leading medical technology centers, participating in similar activities but focused mostly on cardiology and respiratory.

-School tutoring- Tutor in Algebra, Algebra 2, Geometry, physics, calculus AB calc BC

That's as much as I can think of now. Also, I am a disabled student and has overcome many obstacles which many deemed impossible. I'm not sure if this will help me, but it's the truth of the matter.

Anyway, Thank you to all who have reviewed (and survived reading ^_^) my stats and give me feedback, advice, or suggestions. I really appreciate your help. I am extremely determined to become a doctor, and it wasn't soon enough when I learned about this program, so thank you for your help.

we can't really give you advice until we get in...

uhh what az said...lol

ermm..oh..and davidj, i dont thinkk youd be eligible to apply to sophie, cuz you dont live in new yorkk..=/

Petals how did your interviews go? I think mine were Ok....Hope to get in!

Haha, I understand! but do you think you can let me know if my stats seem competitive with other applicants? Or any other advice? and congrats on your interviews!!

Thanks, ^_^

I think mine went well!!
good luck to youu az!

what do you mean Ok? is that a WOAH AWESOME Ok? or an EHH maybe Ok?
im sure you did greatt!

gotwaves, i think you have a chancee..

i believe that sophie is very unpredictable in its admissions
they want to see very compassionate people, and i believe that they would like to see that in your essays first of all. i think they want to see alot of personality.

I dont think they really depend on stats as other schools would. Because if it depended on that, I would have no chance against you.

I'd say focus on passion for medicine, and write awesome essays.

petals905,

Thank you so much for the advice. It is definitely reassuring that it comes down to other factors as well, especially passion, because that is what I am full of. Also thanks for the compliment but I'm sure that you have as much of a chance as anyone, and I know that you did well.
Thank you for the advice

np :) goodluckk

Hey guys. I have been interested in Sophie Davis for quite a while. Although I am only a sophmore ar present, I have obtained a 226 on the PSAT. I wanted to hear everybody's opinion on the issue of Sophie Davis favoring applicants from the city over those from Long Island. I live in a primarily affluent neighborhood, although recently, my parents' income has sharply declined. So, I wanted to hear whether I should bother applying when the time comes, or forget it, assuming the allegations regarding prejudice are upheld

PS: All of my regents grades are 100s-Biology, Math B, Math A, Global History, Spanish
Also, my unweighted cumulative GPA = 98.2

Hi nmehandru,
Well, being a future applicant, I am not qualified to explain any prejudices the admissions office may have, mostly because I don't know of them myself. Having had my chances evaluated by another user, I would say your credentials (the scores and averages you have given) as of now are so far so good. However, it comes down to far more than test scores and grades. Extracurricular are an important factor, as well as leadership roles, and commitment. Petals905 gave me the advice that it also comes down mainly to passionate essays, as well as passion demonstrated during interviews.

If you can, please evaluated my stats (on the preceding page) and tell me what you think. I am very nervous they are not good enough for Sophie, and this is my top choice for schools. But ignore my test scores, I was ill when taking the SAT, so that score will surely be raised, but if you can, let me know what you think about my ECs. Maybe they will give you an idea of what to include. Also, since your only a sophomore, you are young and have time to build up your credentials. I wish I knew about the program when I was your age, but we have to live with what we have, right?

Thanks and good luck

Hey, I am from long Island and I had an interview - no Idea if I am accepted or not, but hopefully I will be. Don't let anything stop you from applying, only the admission committee can do that.

for people who had interview's do you guys remember who your prof. interview's were?

i think i had dr. george brandon..
im pretty sure thats what his name wass..he was a cool cat :)

hey was your interview more general or medical related? i was always curious as to how a sophie davis interview would be.. any advice would be appreciated..

Gotwavez-I think that your extracurriculars are fairly strong. I believe that if you breka 2100 on the SAT, you will have a good chance. Also, for the ACT, I think a score of 32 or better will put you in a better position

Thanks for your response earlier.

Hey az1698, this is nmehandru. Where do you live in Long Island?-I live in Roslyn. I am from the forum on Sophie Davis. Which income bracket are you in. I am not trying to be a creeper. I am just trying to see if I stand a chance if my parents are not lower class and I have decent scores. I wanted to hear your opinion on prejudice of Sophie Davis admissions towards more privileged kids living in the suburbs. Thanks.

they told me that they dont favor anyone..so i dont know why youd be saying stuff like that..

i wasnt even close to breaking a 2100 on my SAT and not EVEN close to a 32 on my ACTs...and i got an interview..

i think anyone has a chance if you make your essays superfantasic
...soo yeah.

Petals905 is right. By law, it is illegal to discriminate based on location and affirmative action ever since the US supreme Court case Bakke v. Regents of University of California, when the university was practicing affirmative action when admitting students to medical school. And a 32 on the ACT is definitely something I will work toward, but surely will be at the higher percentile of scores, and simply may be unreachable for me being disabled.

All in all, I am glad that, as petals said, it mainly comes down to the passion in your essays. Thanks again petals for relaying that information!
