^^^ Things may have changed since my daughter was there,so I’m not 100% sure, but juniors in Pitt housing do NOT get to retain their suites/apts going into senior year. Seniors don’t get Pitt housing at all.

LurkNessMonster: it hasn’t changed. Seniors are not guaranteed housing and you have to move off-campus. Sophomores who have suites/apts. can retain their suites/apt. not the Juniors. Seniors are not guaranteed housing unless you are Chancellor Scholar or athlete.

I hope that changes once the new dorms are built. It’s nice to stay on campus all four years. But I admit that it was a great experience for my daughter to move off campus. Although she missed the convenience, she definitely learned a lot about the ins and outs of everyday life. And rental apartments in Pittsburgh are cheap and easy to find (compared to where we live, at least).

It is a stated goal that the university would like to offer a four year housing guarantee. I don’t know if the new dorms will allow them to do that, but it is a strategic goal of the university. The actual number of students in university housing is extremely high for an urban university: 97% of freshman and 45% of all students. Those % are actually higher than at rural Penn State-main, where only 37% live in university housing. Keep in mind that Pitt didn’t have its first true dorm until 1956.

Ok, so I think I get the whole lottery process and timing for choosing whatever is available online but how does honors housing fit into this? If you have to apply for honors housing as a sophomore, how do you go about choosing your roommates in Forbes-Craig? Do you need to have a list of those names prepared when you apply for honors housing as well?

Here is the info for this year. The link to the online application is at the bottom.

Upperclass Honors Housing
Application Process
Applications for the 2012-13 academic year are due
January, 26, 2012

During the application acceptance period you may submit an application using the link.

Eligibility
Please note the following requirements for applying to the Upperclass Honors Housing:

Applicants must have completed a minimum of one term at the University by the time of application.
Preference is given to applicants with a 3.25 QPA.
Applicants must have a Housing Guarantee (check with the Housing Office for more information on the Housing Guarantee). Students without housing guarantees cannot be considered for honors housing.
Please review the building details below before applying to avoid any confusion. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact Lute White, Coordinator of Honors Housing, by email at llw5@pitt.edu or phone (412-624-8633).

Thanks, MTnest. I had read the eligibility requirements but I don’t understand how room/apt assignments would be made. Obviously for freshman year it was random assignments. I guess I can try contacting Lute White for clarification.

When Awesome gets back to the boards, she will be able to answer it, she was at Forbes Craig. DS chose not to live in the Honors housing.

My daughter applied for honors housing for sophomore year after not living in freshman honors housing. She did not have anyone in mind to live with, so she was assigned two apartment mates, none of whom knew each other. Once they were accepted to honors housing, they were given a time to select an apartment. They lived on the street level on the Forbes side of the building and it was VERY NOISY between the street noise and the drunks on weekends.

If students want to live together in honors housing, all of them must apply and be accepted.

The honors college is in both Brackenridge and Forbes-Craig?

I think honors housing for freshmen is Sutherland and for sophomores and juniors, Forbes-Craig apartments.

lawmom123: Like MD Mom said, you can either not know your roommates ahead of time and be randomly assigned them, OR you can decided with 1-2 friends to apply and put each others names down on the application. All of the people must get in to room together (obviously).

Starting next year, upperclassmen UHC housing will be in BOTH Brackenridge AND Forbes-Craig. There was such a high demand for rooms that the UHC decided to expand housing. The main difference between the two is apartment-style (FC) vs. suite-style (Brack). I think Brackenridge also does mainly 4 person suites, but I could be wrong (check PC).

Awesome, thanks! I haven’t heard much about Brackenridge - looked on PC though and looks nice enough. What are the pros and cons of that bldg?

Never lived there but here’s what I know:

Suite-style (nice, more private than dorm-style). On campus dorm-- meal plan required (that is a pro or a con depending on if you like cooking for yourself or not). In the quad (can get loud on days with quad activities), but is centrally located on lower campus (unlike FC or Sutherland).

Hi! I’m currently a freshman at Pitt so I’ll be a sophomore next year. My three other friends and I want to live in Boquet Gardens but we’re not sure if we’ll get in. My friend has a low lottery number (61) and I wanted to know if anyone thinks that’s possible to get into Boquet with that number as sophomore. Any comments are appreciated Thanks!

My daughter is also a current freshman who is interested in the 4 BRs at Bouquet Gardens. She is looking to room with 2 other freshman and a frien who is currently a sophomore. The sophmore (junior to be) has a lottery number of 260. We were curious how that would work with 3 current freshman and 1 current junior?

Robinsongirl: a current junior (rising senior) will not be able to get on-campus housing unless she is a junior due to her AP credits (and she is really just a sophomore at Pitt).

For rising juniors (currently sophomore) and rising sophomores (current freshmen):

Your daughter and her friends need to fill out the suite/apt. application at Panther Central. Panther Central will generate a list of groups who can choose a suite/apt. (based on lottery number and the amount of suites/apt. available). If your group is on the list, then at the appointed time, you log in and choose your suite/apt. See my prior post – it has the application due date.

As a sophomore you have a small chance, but that’s all that it would be probably. You have to remember that EVERY single junior group (even the junior with number 5000) will get to pick a 4BR apartment (aka Bouquet) before you. Also remember that some Bouquet apartments are taken by upperclassmen athletes who have moved out of Sutherland. Chances are, even with a low number like that, you will probably end up in the quad or upper campus instead of Bouquet.

The sophomore (rising junior) has to put her name down as the “group leader” on the form that they submit to PC. With her name down, and a low number of 260, I’m sure they’ll get a Bouquet apartment. PC assigns the apartment listings based ONLY on the “group leader” on the form, not everyone on the form.

jem215 - my daughter (rising junior) has the lowest number of her group - it’s in the 1400s. They know that’s too high for Bouquet so they are looking at off-campus apartments.
