Just took the ACT for the first time and got a 25 My GPA is a 3.92 weighted and 3.79 unweighted I have plenty of volunteer hours and extracurricular activities. My big question is should i be worried by my low ACT scores. I received 29 on the math, 26 on the reading, 23 on English, and 23 on Science.
The schools i hope to attend are Rice, University of Texas, and Duke.

You’re a sophomore and you have MORE than a year to apply to colleges. My first time taking the ACT I scored a 29, which was less than I hoped for. Next time I scored a 32, then my last time I scored a 33. It’s a long shot to get into those schools with a 25.

Wait, why the hell are you taking the ACT now? Almost everybody takes the ACT as a junior; and that is because the ACT consists of algebra, geometry, and algebra two; which you should have taken all three by junior year. You take the ACT on knowledge you already know, it makes no sense to take a test on information you havent formally learned.

Statistically, people’s scores go up over time. If you are really that concerned, take a class over the summer. They can be expensive but they can also be helpful with giving tips and strategies. Honestly, it’s too early to be worrying at this point. I didn’t take the ACT til March of my Junior year for our mandated state testing and took it two more times and my score increased a point each time. Your scores will improve. =D

I’m already taking pre calculus as a sophmore so I really felt I should have done better on the math.

For a lot of people, timing is a big challenge during the ACT, almost more so than knowing the material. Perhaps it wasn’t that you didn’t know that math, but that your pacing was off? In which case, a few practice tests would help you tremendously!

You have plenty of time :)

Get some practice books…

Take the SAT also…some do better on that.
