Hi, everyone! I’ve done a lot of browsing over these forums the past couple of years, so I’ve researched each course I plan on taking, however, I would like to know how reasonable it seems from others’ perspectives.
I am very involved in a few extracurricular activities, and I would like to maintain a high level of commitment to those. I was able to do so this past year while being in all honors/accelerated courses along with one AP and one CC course.
My schedule for my sophomore year right now looks like this:
AP Chem
APUSH
AP Comp Sci Principles
Adv. Lit
Spanish III
Pre-Calc
Intro to Psych (CC course) first semester and then another CC course the second semester (will likely be one to do with state government or international relations)
Am I setting myself up for failure with these courses, or is it possible that I could maintain good grades AND my dedication to my extracurriculars?
I struggled a bit with accelerated chemistry (year’s worth of material in one semester) this past year, but it is the only science course I can take this year, which worries me.
If it’s of any importance, I hope to go into political science - I’m (potentially) taking AP Principles of Computer Science because it interests me, but I may drop that class before the school year starts depending on how I feel about my schedule.
Thanks!
It seems to me that you are taking a lot of typically Junior or Senior level classes when you’re a sophomore (for example, APUSH, Pre-Calc and Lit). And to be frank, I don’t see the point of taking AP Chem when you struggled with accelerated chem and you don’t want to pursue anything STEM related. Why is it the only option?
Because of scheduling conflicts and very few course offerings (the only other AP science offered is Physics), AP Chem is really my only option. Though I took two years of science (acc bio and acc chem) during my freshman year, I am hesitant to take a gap year of science at this point in high school. By the way, thank you so much for your input - it’s provided me with more clarity than I had previously!
@IvyGirl27 Sorry, I’m still new to this and forgot to reply properly! ^
Could you wait till junior year to take APUSH? it’s really a junior year course - you could take AP Euro or AP WH if you want to take an AP History class, or, since you’re taking a class at the CC, why not take a history sequence there in addition to Intro to Psych (and second semester, why not take Intro to Sociology?)
@MYOS1634 I can’t speak for the OP, but at my school, APUSH is only available to sophomores.
It’s typically a junior class but it’s depend on your social science sequence. If it’s typical and can be handled by sophomores, no problem. But if it’s designed for juniors it can make things a bit tough not just content wise but planning wise. Not impossible but the sequence that follows needs to be thought through. I can try to look up actual percentages nationally to see what percentage sophomores take it.
