sophomore thinking of going to college now

Hi my name is jacob, I am currently a sophomore in upstate new york. I hate highschool for many reasons. I don’t feel like I am being challenged enough. I have one college credit from last year and should be getting 2 more from this year… if I finish out the year… I have missed over 70 days this year because I refuse to go. I don’t have many friends and have no good memory’s from high school so far, and don’t believe I will get any because I don’t have many friends. Even the friends I do have don’t invite me to do things, and when I invite them they find a reason to cancel. I was thinking about just taking the ged and going to college early. I believe I am smart enough to pass, but I feel like my absences will hold up my plans. The 3 college credits that I do have are all for technology, and I plan on becoming an engineer. Does anyone know if it would be possible? I don’t care about missing out on high school experiences because I don’t believe I will get any anyway. If I go back to school (which I plan on doing) to finish out this year I should pass all my classes because I am smart and get 90’s and up on my tests without even studying. I feel like this could be the jump start on my life that I am looking for. I just need to know if it is possible. My mom gave me the idea because one of her friends daughter did it when she was a sophomore and was successful, but I don’t know if she missed as many days as me. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated. If you need more info from me just ask and you shall receive. Thank you.

It sounds like you are pretty miserable in your school. You have not provided enough information to use to judge your situation. So I will speak in general terms. Usually I’d say you should explore all options like switching schools, etc. Assuming you are very competent academically and you have the support of your parents, it seems like a reasonable option for some students. In fact there are some colleges (Bard, for example) that have special programs for younger college students. One possibility is to attend community college first. That would allow you to live at home but establish a new set of friends and continue with academics. But if you are in upstate NY and don’t drive, transportation may be an issue. Going away to college seems like it would introduce risks. You may find yourself in situations you are not ready to handle. But, given your mom is on board with this, it seems reasonable to me (if you are well adjusted and academically competent).

I am 16 and will be getting my junior license in august which is well before school starts and the school I am planning on going to first aswell as the second one are both pretty close to home (commuteable) so those aren’t issues it’s just weather or not it would be possible that is the issue
