Hi, I always wanted to join a sorority, and with college coming up next school year I’ve decided that I will be rushing! I’m black and I’ve looked at all types of soroites and NPHCs (black soroites) aren’t for me, so i’ll be rushing for a PC one( which I knew for a long time). I have nothing against NPHCs I just feel like I wouldn’t relate to any of the girls and I grew up in a prodomeitly white area. All of the colleges I’ve been interested in are big in Greek life for example university of Arizona, West Virginia university, university of Oregon, etc. and I look at their soroites and I don’t see much diversity. I’m worried to rush because I feel like I won’t get accepted to one because i’m black and it happened to other girls in the past
:(. Am I wrong about the soroites and is there actually people that aren’t white in them? Orrr? Please help! Thank you
Yes, there is a lot of segregation in sororities, though it is not universal. So check each school’s sororities to see how segregated or integrated they are.
At some colleges, there is also a Multicultural Greek Council of fraternities and sororities. These may include chapters that try to recruit students of all backgrounds, though they may also include chapters that are predominantly Latino or Asian.
Personally, I would wait until you’ve chosen a school and met the girls before you make a decision as to what you’re doing. Every school is different. You may arrive and hate the girls in the type of sorority you think you’re going to love. Many schools don’t let first semester freshmen pledge (which I think is a great idea) so if you end up at a school like that, you’ll have some time to meet the girls and decide what’s best at that point.
I’m in an NPHC sorority, and many of my sorors (collegiate and alumnae) grew up in predominantly white areas/neighborhoods/schools. Of course you have to choose whichever is the best fit for you, and if that’s an NPC sorority, go for it! But I wouldn’t make assumptions about the identities, backgrounds, and personalities of the women in any kind of sorority until you get to college. The women within NPHC sororities are just as diverse and different from one another as the women in NPC, NALFO, or other sororities.
Different schools have different kinds of Greek life. I’ve looked at years of the chapter photos for some large universities (particularly SEC ones) and have seen what looks like mostly white, mostly homogeneous chapters. However, I don’t know if that’s because they were consciously or unconsciously discriminating against women of color OR because most of the women of color who rushed decided to go for an NPHC, NALFO, or multicultural sororities. I’ve also seen much more diverse NPC chapters at other universities! So it really depends on where you go.
You also have to consider the university itself. The University of Oregon is 58% white and only 2% black, so if you are looking for images of black women in UO’s sorority pictures, you might not find many - but the chapters there might be plenty welcoming of black women who are interested. Similarly, WVU is 78% white and only 4% black. UA, on the other hand, is more diverse - over a quarter Latino/Hispanic - and if you look at their sororities’ photo albums, they are on face more racially/ethnically diverse.
NPC sororities have rush and formal recruitment for a reason - it’s a way for you to get to know the young women in the sororities at your campus and to decide whether sorority life is for you. The only way for you to know is to try, and if you don’t get accepted to one (for whatever reason) you can decide how to proceed from there.
